I'm a Highschool Graduate!!

You, the casual reader, are probably asking yourself why this is a big deal...

To understand, you'll need a short backstory.

It all started about 8 years ago. My family had moved to Puerto Rico. Due to the locale, none of the public schools spoke english, and all of the private schools were laughable... So homeschooling become one of the only options. In sixth grade, I began my steady descent.

Due to home-based circumstances, I fell severely behind. Soon, the combination of apathy and little to no support ended up with me dropping out of school in the ninth grade. D:

Just recently, I signed up for a high school graduate course online. Not a GED, a full diploma :D

I passed with a 3.65 GPA and am an official high school graduate now. :D :D

The competency test they sent out doubled as a final exam apparently. Because that's seriously all I did. According to the school, I did so well on the placement that further schooling was deemed superfluous.

And just to say it one more time (because for about 2 years I was almost certain I wouldn't graduate at all)....

I graduated February 26, 2008!

Congrats, man!

I'm still in High School right now with about the same GPA you graduated with. I'm expecting to graduate with honors with the top 20% of the class of '09. Honor graduates get to wear gold stripes, not silver. :D

Touching story, by the way. :)

Edit: cue victory music!

Edit2: wait, why does your location say Fort Worth, Texas then?

Congrats Wither :) Homeschooling does work, I know, I did it. :) I'm no maths whizz & I couldn't tell you all the periodic table in order of atomic weight but I'm a decent human being with bad handwriting (but getting better slowly) & a massive interest in all things interesting, be it music, art, web design & the languages involved with that, programming languages, architecture, & just generally everything. I know a fair amount about lots of things, a lot about a few things (music & photography) & everything about nothing.

Congrats again dude, now go to college, get drunk, do drugs & have copious amounts of sex with far too many people like any other respectable student ;)

Edited a typo or twain

dA

Son, someday you will make a girl happy for a short period of time. Then she'll leave you & be with men that are ten times

better than you can imagine. These men are called musicians. :D

no matter what led to you not getting that diploma before ..its water under the bridge.

the most important thing about your post is you took charge of your own destiny. All too often those with adversity in their background whine the song "oh poor me my past is to fault" and never get on with being responsible about moving forward. You've done well my friend and I send you pats on the back and congrats all around.

Next challenge... university?

Erm...huh? I don't...really...get it...? You live in Puerto Rico...? You..dropped out of 9th grade...?

I lived down in Puerto Rico from 10-13. While I was there, I started falling behind. When we moved back to Texas, we all thought that I'd be able to catch up... but I was lazy with it. >_> By 15, we moved to Florida. At this point, I was at least two full grades behind and couldn't possibly care less. D:

Just a few months ago, we came back to Texas again, found the course, signed up, aced it. Now we celebrate! :D

:D Thanks, oma. I was always sort of worrisome about becoming one of those "I'm a loser because of my past and flip burgers for a living" people. D:

But now that's not the case! :D (It also makes me the first person in my family to graduate... even if it was a little unorthodox. ;))

As for university, I'm not sure. I definitely want to go. Probably try for a career in web design or graphic arts in general.... The possibilities are endless... again! ;)

Congrats!

But I'm glad I didn't have that much trouble, just like most other ppl in the netherlands I finished VWO in the normal 6 years without ever doing anything serious (homework only in the first 2 years, learning only for french and german)

I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed.. :(

wow that's great! probably would explain where you've been for the past few weeks :D

congratulations!!

Good luck in your future education if you seek it [you better! 8)]

on a side note, I've always wondered about homeschooling... I guess it has to do with the parents but we have home schooled kids that moved up to high school classes and they're mostly antisocial and kind of weird... I always suspected that they were being over protected by their parents and were not exposed to social situations often, so the transition to a big school must be tough. I try to be as nice as possible to them, but they resist a lot.........

It's obvious you're not like that though! :)

According to the wikipedia article, a diploma is a certificate received in the US at the end of sixth forum education.

The hell with wikipedia. Don't believe everything you read on it. Even if it does seem right. :P

Wikipedia is excellent for quick reference, but always cite your sources when committing to a more formal arrangement. Don't knock the 'pedia.

I could not agree more.

You have made a larger achievement than most who go through the standard route of academia for the fact you have had to tackle more to get there. Well done, Troy!
