13Misfit13
I need to know if these specs look good? I have said it before and I am saying it again, I am not computer savy, but it was time to upgrade to somthing that will handle my on-line sim racing needs. Any feedback would be great. The operating system is Windows XP 64bit - not vista because of too many compatibility problems with the games I run. I was told it might be a little overboard, but that does not bother me in the least. Curmudgeon
Sounds fast... Only thing I would wonder about in the long run is HDD storage space. But it's easy to pop in a slave drive
13Misfit13
The computer will only be used for 3 games, Nascar Racing 2003 Season, Arca Sim Racing and RFactor as well as it will only be used for creating the paint schemes via paint.net and school work (MSword) but what is a slave drive and why do you think HD space will be an issue?
Curmudgeon
A slave drive is just an additional hard drive, which you can add if you need more hard disk space. But it sounds like, if you're only using it for 3 games plus a few other utilities, then hard disk space shouldn't be an issue. When I had my last computer, it came with a 250gb hard drive, and less than a year later I added an external 250gb drive as I was running low. But it sounds like you shouldn't worry about hard drive space with the programs you intend to run.
david.atwell
Your RAM is HUGE overkill. Windows XP will only recognize 3.12GB of RAM at a time; ergo, having 8GB is just a waste of money. 13Misfit13
I was told that was true of a 32 bit os but that it would be different for a 64 bit os....this is not true?
david.atwell
Hmm...I didn't see that part. You may be right; I'm not sure. :-) The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... Like I said..I am computer dumb..so When I was first interested I asked a few guys and one person mention what you did and said that I would need the 64 bit os to utilize all the ram...is 64 bit os compatibale with paint.net? david.atwell
It sure is. The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... 13Misfit13
great...so other than that it looks good? I just want somthing that is not going to lag, will run what I want, and is a point-click-open without the 10 sec wait I have now on my 6 year old machine that has started having over-heating issues and has system dumps all the time. harold
If i were you, I would get 4GB ram that is twice as fast (and a faster CPU for that matter, such as a QX9850) I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed.. harold
Also I'm not 100% sure that 700Watt would be enough? Have you checked that? I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed..

Mr Frojo
Dont get the 8800 gt's. Wait a month or so for nvidia to relelase the 9800, and get one of those. I'm still alive!
harold
8800GT's aren't that bad.. you do know that thats the power cable/supply dont you that's exactly why I'm doubting it's enough.. 2 graphics card and a quad core, well, I would guess that would be right on the edge of 700W, but that's just a guess, which is why it should be checked I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed.. Look for 800~850 to be on the safe side. Also, use higher speed ram. 800mhz minimum, but 1066 mhz would be better.

Its just that getting 2 of them will cost about the same as 1 9800, which looks like it would have much more powerful. Its also a lot easier to upgrade a computer if you get 1 really good card than 2 alright cards. I'm still alive!
Sozo
You could always get the ATI HD 3870 X2...
harold
Fortunately the ATI/nVidia choice is made by your motherboard (they generally don't support both CrossFire and SLI at the same time) unless you aren't bothered with dual-gpu stuff or if you make the choice backwards by selecting the motherboard on which brand of GPU you want.. I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed..
Stephan
You could always get the ATI HD 3870 X2... No. You don't. The 8800GT (x2) WILL top one 9800. Unless that's X2. Then you will fail. And on ATi... I dare not even talk about it. Their flagship (not the x2, that's just 2 gpu's with one PCIe connector...) is 4th on the GPU quality list (4: 3870, 3: 8800GT 2: 8800GTX 1: 8800 Ultra).
