Your favourite strange word

Post your favourite strange word(s).

If it is a word that people will not know the meaning of please post a link to its meaning.

Your word could be strange becuase: It is long, spelt wierd, hard to pronounce etc.

hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia - it's wonderfully ironic

hijinks - three dotted letters one after another looks funny

mnemonics - the only English word to my knowledge to feature a silent M

sarsaparilla - frequently misspelled/fun to say

ubiquitous - also fun to say (it means everywhere)

OKEECHOBEE - when in caps, is perfectly symmetrical (horizontally) (there are others too... But I like Okeechobee)

dutchessship - three S's in a row, how 'bout that? :D

Rhythm - revel in its vowellessness!

Vowellessness - I just made it up.

Ghoti - maybe not officially English, but if you pronounce "gh" as in "tough," "o" as in "women," and "ti" as in "action," it sounds more recognizable. :-)

i have only one word.

Fish- well yes fish as in the fish we eat but i end almost every sentetence with it and i use it as a swear word ^_^ cause im so close to get expled from school and i am hot tempered so i have to use it or off with my head lol.

"Foemp" = word i use for people that just said something Dumb

"PdotS" = i use that for something made in Photoshop that can be made in PaintDotNET

onomatopoeia - use of words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to. For example buzz, whoosh, clang, rustle and my favourite thwack.

quandary - a situation in which it is difficult to decide what to do.

irascible - easily provoked to anger. (think pyrochild :) )

persiflage - frivolous or bantering talk.

confuzed - a remake on the word confused. imo confuzed sounds better and i tend to use it a lot

Electroencephalogram has always been my favorite word, period, especially because I can type it out correctly without the help of the spell checker (or Google for that matter).

I just thought of a few more...

Oxymoron - A phrase in which two words of contradictory meaning are used together, e.g. "wise fool" or "good grief"

Discombobulate - To confuse someone

Floccinaucinihilipilification - The action of judging something to be worthless

Parapfernalia - Random objects

Syzygy - A pair of related things that are either similar or opposite

Dreamt - The only word in English that ends in "mt"

Trichodecaphobia - A fear of the number 13

I forgot one of my favourites...

schadenfreude: a malicious satisfaction in the misfortunes of others.

here's a few others..

opprobrium: reproach mingled with contempt.

termagant: a scolding, nagging, bad-tempered woman.

transmogrify: to transform.

miasma: a thick vaporous atmosphere, often noxious.

Glottal of or pertaining to the glottis.

Glottis the opening at the upper part of the larynx, between the vocal cords.

and my fav...

Phobophobia a morbid fear of developing a phobia ...

uh...if you develop a fear of developing a phobia...you developed a phobia there for your phobia is nullified...plus it sounds weird...say it 10 times really fast.

(it's dutch, and is a long word for the boss of a factory that makes shutters for packages of milk-chocolate sprinkels.)

Sandaziumize - when your brain goes into a state of multi tasking at a phenomenal amount. :shock:

They are only theoretical. They were once words in the english language, but banned for unkown reasons.

I posted "discombobulate" on the previous page, basically, it means to confuse someone.

bibliotheque - French for "Library", pronounced beeb-lee-oh-tech

Meli-Melo - French for "Mixed and matched," pronounced may-lee-may-low

Dejeuner - French for "snack," or "lunch," pronounced Day-je-nay

bisou - French for "Kiss," pronounced bee-zoo
