I think I'll post up something...

I made a desktop background, and I figured it'd be rude of me to not give you a chance to experience my awesomeness!

Yeah, I noticed that... But that's your fault anyway! Or rather, GDI's fault. That's actually a letter: the letter "Z" in the font set Shadow. It was rendered like that when I made the text...

I updated it, though. Thanks!

After Dan was so kind to share his awesomeness with us all... I decided to contribute as well.

OK, this is a revised version of the first background I made with Paint.NET 2.6 Final.

It is very minimalist. That's how i like my desktops... dark and clean.

Here is another version...

@ BuzzKill:

Yeah, you're right: Those new ones do look better.

I think I like the top one better, with the darker bar across the bottom of the flame. It fits better, creating better emphasis on the flame itself. Nice work!

@ ShimmeryDaze:

Dang! That's something I've never been able to do: sprite work. I just can't see the pixels as part of an image as a whole, making it difficult for me to tell just what color I should make each pixel so it flows well with what's next to it, making a cohesive image in the end.... Blarg! I get confused just talking about it. But it looks like you've got a real talent for that stuff. Well done!

Thanks Dan, I'm gonna have to agree with you on the the first background. Although I didn't think that bottom bar was visible enough for anybody to catch it. That second background was a failed attempt at creating a glass bar with an image in it. To me it looks like the image is just sitting atop a grey background. I went back in and tried to make the bar look glassy and I came out with this...

I don't think I'm quite there yet with the glass effect. What do you think? BTW, Nice job on the new sig bar!

ShimmeryDaze, Nice work! I have a friend who loves that sort of stuff so I sent an email to her with a link to your website. She's gonna be thrilled!

Hey, that one looks good! I think the glass effect could use some work, but you've got that one looking better. Maybe if you put a gradient behind the flame thing.

Something like this, maybe:

glassflame.png

I find that glass effects look most realistic when the back layer (with the color on it) fades (top-down) from a dark variation of the color, to the color itself, to a light variation of the color.

Then, on top of that, you have the sheen layer (the reflection). Most reflections end in a sharp edge, the point at which the surface bends to a point where the light no longer hits it at the needed angle.

It looks like you have the sheen layer done pretty well, but you could use a bit more of a gradient across the bottom. Other than that little thing, well done! I like the fact that that new one has more of a structure to it. I like things that have a center decoration type of thing. Almost all of my backgrounds have blank top-bottom sections with the design in the middle.

Oh, by the way, thanks for the compliment on my new sig bar! But, I've already changed it again. I wasn't happy with the 2px wide borders.

Thanks for that tip about the background gradient. That does make sense for the top of the gradient to be darker and the bottom lighter. If a light source where to hit the glass bar it would cause some of the light to be reflected off and some of the light to remain trapped inside at the bottom of the bar.

Hey, Do you know of a good freeware applicaton for making animated GIFs? I would like to animate my sig bar so it looks like the text and the logo slide in from underneath the top plate.

Thank you, Dan. :D

I have no idea what you're talking about, lol. You start with a base on one layer, draw some hair on another, etc. I could lend you some palettes if you have trouble finding colors that go together...? Shading just takes practice. Each element (hair, pants, eyes) has about 2-5 shades each, the eye does the rest of the blending. You're welcome to zoom in on the image and see for yourself. :)

I guess it also depends on interest. The reason I started making dollz is because I was interesting in fashion design. Basically, it's a drawing of a person who is wearing clothes...heh. Pretty simple. I get stuck on backgrounds and props. Plus people (even other dollers) talk about light source all the time, which totally loses me. You can probably tell--I usually just do basic back is dark, front is light shading...heheh...

BuzzKill:

Hey, that looks like glass!

As far as animated .gifs go, I just use The GIMP, since I already have it on my computer. I'm not sure though if you'll want to install a whole 'nuther image editing app on your machine just for animated .gifs.

If you want to check out a GIF program, there's this one:

http://www.pysoft.com/GIF_Designer_fr.html

I havent' used it much, but it looks capable.

ShimmeryDaze:

No amount of explaning will ever un-confuse me! I just can't do that stuff. Trust me.

I made an RPG on my TI-83 Plus graphing calculator once, and I made all the art for it as well. My enemies sucked. They were like outlines with faces. Then a friend of mine took 'em, changed the form a bit, added shading (this is black and white stuff; not greyscale, pure black/white), and they kicked butt!

You should've seen one of my big baddies after he got done with it. It was this crazy flame beast. When I made it, it was just a wimpy flame thing, but he took it and made it into a veritable monster. That thing was cool...

Anyway, that to exemplify: I can't do sprite work. To save my life. I just hope terrorists never take me and say: "Make me a sprite now or die!" 'Cuz then I be dead...

You made a GAME on your calculator?

Yeah, it was all done in the native programming language thing of the calculator. That became a nightmare to manage. I think I still have it on my calculator actually...

*checks*

Yep! Still there.

The problem with the game, though, since it runs straight in the memory, I can't do memory optimization or anything like that (as if I'd even know how...), so if you play it for too long, the calculator poops out on you. Thankfully, I was able to get a save type thing in there where, if you turn off the calculator, then go to play again, it re-reads the variable values straight back into the program. However, if you change one of the variables in between, you can make youself level 500 if you knew the variable I was using. I was also going for a password system so you could resume a game after using the variables in between, but I don't think I ever got that far.

I LOVE your new av, btw.

The new orb? Thanks!

Yeah, that one was actually made with Paint.NET this time. The orb I had up a few days ago was made with the GIMP. So I decided to make one in the program to which the board on which I use it is devoted.

Man, proper grammar can get confusing.

Yah, that thing is seriously cool. I can't stop staring at it.

It struck me after I posted that--You made a GAME on your calculator? I remember someone shared like a tetris type thing where the 'U' catches 'O's but I could not figure out how they coded it. And I looked at the code and everything. Did NOT make me want to make games on it. *sigh* Back then (1995) that was the cool thing to do with those. I could barely use it to do my homework, lol. I tell you what, if you make another game, I'll take care of your sprites for you, okay? Lol. You should see my dragons, they kick butt.

Ah, whatever. I edited my post up there to reply to your edited post, then you un-edited the post and made a new one...

*gets a headache*

I'll just leave the response up there.

I made a 2D tile-based "RPG" in 4-color CGA on my 286 once. It was pretty cool at the time, although of course pretty lame in hindsight ;)

Too bad my hard drive exploded and I lost all of it :(

Sprites look awesomular but they take ages to draw. A few years ago i drew these for a game called little fighter 2, but the time it took me to draw just these two completely drained my will to live since the game needed about 50 different sprites.

gohan.jpg

I also made the sprites in this game and it took even longer.

thebean.jpg

unless the game envolves stickmen you should stay away from it!!!!

You must be a very patient person to do sprite work. If i Had a icecream id give it to you for being so patient!

Lol, sorry for the confusion, Dan.

Actually, aatwo, I don't do sprite work really. Dollz are a little bit different, but if you check out Angy Chan, she does both and they're awesome. http://www.yumestudio.it/angychan/ She does details, props, backgrounds, animation, and it's all just amazing. Your sprites are very cute too. I dig your pickle guy, lol.

There is no such thing as "lame." At least that's what I keep telling myself to keep my self-esteem high...

Yeah, my game was mainly menu-based. I tried making one where you were a dot running around on the world map, but the continuous running of the key-press trap loop used up all the available memory within about 30 seconds.

And aatwo:

That Little Fighter sprite guy kinda looks like a DBZ character (I'm not sure which one, as I don't watch the show). And that Pickle guy rocks! Would he have gotten to use that gun down there?

yay you recognised him!!! He is Gohan from dragonball Z, because me and a load of people were setting out to make a dragonball Z mod of little fighter 2. But after a few months it dissolved!

But yeh.... I used to watch dragonball Z...... please dont judge me!

The pickle guy can pick up the gun and hold it n stuff, but he can't shoot. Hes mostly rubbish!
