Simon Brown
If Windows didn't exist - which operating system would you use - Linux, OSX, Solaris or would you give up using computers altogether?
Mike Ryan
well, I have linux and OSX on my machine so I would have to say both 8) (And no, I am not using a Mac)

david.atwell
Ugh. Who'd choose OSX? Linux. Linux. A million times Linux. Quote  The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... Mike Ryan
I chose Mac OSX because I boot into it more  Lol, just kidding. You need to give it more credit though. More user friendly  Edit: Now that I think of it though, I dont think I have ever tested the waters with FreeBSD, I might set up a virtual PC for it later
david.atwell
OSX is TOO user-friendly, I think. It hides everything important so you can't "break" anything, which I hate. Mike Ryan
That is true. I must agree, hacking OSX is no fun at all.

Mike Ryan
But there is more creativity in the small amount of programs available for it. Plus, time machine does a good job if you can configure it correctly.

Mike Ryan
most linux distros come with a live cd that allows you to try out the OS without actually installing it. I would recommend trying out Ubuntu on a live cd and then make your decision
Simon Brown
But if you decide you like linux more - do a duel boot. There are still many great programs that only run on windows - Paint.NET for a start.
Zagna
If Windows had never been... Linux would have only Gnome that looks like Windows 95 and there wouldn't be a OSX, it would still be at Mac OS 6. In my opinion Windows has brought a lot of competition which has advanced every aspect of computers. We'd still be perfectly content with just Pentium 2 because that would all that is needed to run anything. ....mooo
david.atwell
You make a good point. The question is rather moot, because without Windows, no one would be trying to do it better than Windows. :-) Quote  The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... Mike Ryan
I beg to differ. Without the wheel, we would not all still be cavemen. I believe that operating systems and hardware as a whole would go in a much different direction without Windows. Edit: fixed a few typos
Zwicky
whether that different direction be better or worse, its anyones guess! :? i'd use mac, simply because i haven't really used linux before
usedHONDA
Kubuntu for the win! If not that, then Ubuntu Studio or Mandriva. So many Linux distros, so little time. Simon Brown
I wish it was easy to choose a linux distro. I guess most people just choose the most popular ones which isn't too great for the less well-known ones.
