I saw a quote by JJ Abrams about Star Wars Episode VII and posted a thread on Reddit about it.  It, uh...kind of blew up.

Forgot to mention how Captain America: Civil War was.... 7/10.
 
It was ok, felt more like just plain plot progression in preparation for Infinity War and other upcoming movies.
Fight scenes were great and (spoilers about the new guys) were the most exciting part of it... Black Panther was cool looking.

Me Before You - disease-of-the-week format is buoyed by the charismatic lead Emilia Clarke (aka Kahleesi from GoT). A tear-jerker with unsuspected depth and poignancy. 8/10.

 

Warcraft - Couldn't help the feeling I was dropped into this story half-way through. Characters are often miscast and introduced poorly, making the first viewing muddled at best. The Orcs though are fantastic! With eye popping CGI the battle scenes are brilliant and magic (for once) is particularly well handled. 6/10.

Okay, Rogue One was pretty good. Title worthy of being called a Star Wars story.

It wasn't as epic as TFA but then again this was a full story instead of being a part of a trilogy.

I wish I had a VHS player to watch New Hope right now

The original version (non-"special edition") of 'A New Hope' was released on DVD about 10 years ago. Those specific DVDs are hard to find these days, though.

I wish they'd release the original versions in HD.

I was worried during the first quarter of the movie as there were too many quick cuts. But, it smoothed out and became really interesting. 

K-2SO was one of the better robots in the entire series. 

Guy Henry/CGI was amazing as Grand Moff Tarkin. I thought I was looking at Peter Cushing. Some people thought it looked fake--I thought the CGI was amazing.

There were some rough spots in an otherwise great movie: 

Darth Vader didn't walk right. Can't explain it other to say that something seemed "off". EDIT: people on the Rogue One board at IMDb are calling it the "The Vader sashay". 

A certain cameo at the end of the movie looked computer generated and really fake. The eyes were right but the mouth was all wrong.

Did some nosing around and found out that one of the guys in Anakin's suit played a Minotaur in "Clash of the Titans.' Might have affected the "imposing" walk?

 

And yeah, that cameo's a LITTLE too Uncanny Valley.

Hidden Figures (2016) 8.5/10 

I am so glad there are inspiring movies like this that I can show my children someday. My African American daughter is too young for it now but hopefully she can see it one day and be inspired to do great things.

IMDb.com is going to shut down their message board on February 20, 2017.  Source

 

This is not going over well at the IMDb.com forums, as you can probably guess.

 

Many people have tried to guess why they would destroy their own community, including one former employee:

The reason IMDb is getting rid of the message boards is simple: they can't be monetised. Forget the fact that the site has compiled 20+ years worth of important data - if one of the sections can no longer be monetised effectively (Literature, for example), they'll just get rid of it. 

In financial terms, keeping the message boards live costs IMDb basically nothing, bar the human cost of maintenance, which - when considered in the context of the site's huge annual profit margin - is less than miniscule. 

There's no point complaining about it, making suggestions, or suggesting alternate, viable solutions - the hacks at IMDb don't give a toss. There's no money in it for them, so they're not interested. They'll fob you off with the usual hollow platitudes, but make no mistake, the IMDb that people love died years ago. Now, the site is just a shiny, corporate plaything, pimped out by Amazon for the purposes of making money, with greed - not customer focus - being its primary driving force. 

One final note: it probably burns IMDb that the majority (over one third) of their users come from China, the audience for which is far less valuable to advertisers than, say, the USA and the UK. Only about 5% of IMDb's users come from the UK, which is ironic considering the site originated in England. But, I digress - this post will, of course, be deleted, but what the hell. I don't care!"

 

A sad commentary on the state of web sites today.  I think their site is simply too large to manage.

Without the discussions, I really don't see the point in visiting your site.

 

The real disappointing thing is that you never considered promoting normal users into volunteer moderators to keep the discussions on track and free of spam.  I'm sure there are many people who would volunteer.  (In fact, I volunteer at two different communities to moderate message boards--without pay, I just love the communities)  You could have even had a system like stackoverflow.com where trusted members are automatically promoted into moderator positions. But, you chose the nuclear option instead.

 

I hope that once you see the results of destroying the community you'll come to your senses and build a message system that is self-sustainable... I only hope it's not too late.

Not sure what all the fuss is about. Didn't seem like Oscar material to me. Looked more like a watered down version of No Country for Old Men.

Okay, John Wick: Chapter 2 is a beautiful sequel to John Wick: Chapter 1. The fight scenes have been greatly polished and will leave you shocked.

Logan on the other hand is exactly like reviews said it was, unlike any other superhero movie before. Hard to describe.

I'm not normally in for love stories, but The Age of Adaline is one with a twist and so I took a dive. Blake Lively has been doing groovy flicks, I think (have a go at The Shallows if you're after something gorier and action-packed a la shark attack).

I was a fan of The Equalizer TV series back in the second half of the 80s when I was a child-almost-teen, starring the late Edward Woodward as Robert McCall —a retired intelligence agent turned Samaritan (in case you're unfamiliar with the plot), role for which he won a Golden Globe in 1987—. I quite like the 2014 remake for the big screen starring Denzel Washington. Perhaps I like it too much because I've seen it more than twice... a little over four times actually and it seems there's a sequel due in 2018. Here I leave a fragment of the ending scenes of the 2014 movie in case you're interested and haven't seen it yet:

Hmm ... I would give it a 6/10. I thought some of the emotional responses were way too dramatic and forced.

 

Cool story idea, really good visual presentation, but it seemed like someone said "You know what would make this movie better? Dumbing it down for teenagers with some poorly developed emotions and love stuff." And by "better" they meant "sell better". (I understand the business rationale. That doesn't mean I have to enjoy the result  )

 

Also, here's a BIG HINT to anyone who may want to watch this: DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER. Just go watch the movie. Go in with zero knowledge and expectations. The trailer spoils some important aspects of the story's development.

 

Despite my criticism of it, it was worth the $5 rental on Amazon Prime.

I'm usually pretty easy on Sci-Fi movies... just because I love visions of the future.

 

Also, I didn't see the trailer before watching the movie. So, maybe I graded it higher because of that.

 

I would have liked to see more of their relationship over the years.
