barkbark00
Well, I'm a newbie and don't know anything about layers, yet. Layers are something I want to learn because I use numerous instances of MS Paint with copy and paste for my layering applicating.Well, the help file is your friend...http://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/en/ Quote Take responsibility for your own intelligence. 😉 -Rick Brewster

thegrindre
This is my second attempt at Paint.net and didn't have any trouble with an earlier version but this 3.2 seems to crash on me when I save anything. barkbark00
@Myrddin, You do realize that working with a 1600x1200 file @ 96dpi has the same effect on your system as a 1600x1200 file @ 300dpi... thegrindre
@barkbark00. How did you get a 'clean' copy of the door? Is that the magic wand thing in removing all the red??? Big numbers embellish the point of a big picture therefore making my circumstance seem more worse than it was, and whether said big numbers have any relevance to the conversation at hand or not. thegrindre
Help. Newbie question. How do you select a certain color, (you said gray(hex = 3F3F3F) ), for the bucket fill??? I can't seem to find a 'color choice' option anywhere. Quote At my age, 'happy hour' is a nap... My web site, http://www.allricksstuff.com is for narrow gauge train lovers... thegrindre
OK, it's me again. @barkbark, Your shading, the example you posted here is a perfect shadow and is what I'm trying to accomplish. Mine comes out as faded gray lines and doesn't look very good. How did you get the greenish shadow as opposed to my grayish shadow? Yours looks natural/realistic and mine looks added on. I could use a green hue instead of gray but it still would be a add on and not blended in as yours is. Thanks, Rick Quote At my age, 'happy hour' is a nap... barkbark00
You should be adding the shadow to a separate layer, above the original image. You need to change the Blending Mode of the that shadow layer to 'Multiply'. thegrindre
Oops, forgot that step. Thanks again. I also tried it with a green fill and it looks pretty good, too. I'm catching on, though. I knew this app would be a good program. It's doing what I've always wanted to do but couldn't before now. I think I've got it, I just have to practice a bit more. I've now got to figure out what's causing the 'save'/'save as' crashes. Rick Quote At my age, 'happy hour' is a nap... My web site, http://www.allricksstuff.com is for narrow gauge train lovers... oma
rather complicated for simple straight drop shadows required on straight lines in a picture. since he is only doing the under edge of the cross pieces would not a simple transparent layer on top and use a line tool set at lower alpha gray work just the same no blending required. barkbark00
That would work, especially on something so small. But, changing the blending mode allows more of the detail to show through. It would make a bigger difference if he was working with larger images... oma
ahhhh now I understand why I didn't notice much difference between how your method turned out and how mine worked on the image. I'll have to keep this other method in mind for larger pics. thanks for explaining. Quote My Deviant Art Gallery Oma's Paint.Net gallery
