I wrote some bloody potato in MS QBasic back about ten years ago. :-P It was fun, I suppose...

I'd like to become a coder, though. Any advice?

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

True, but when it comes to programming, or at least learning the foundational concepts, nothing beats a good book, as generally, they've already been screened for good content before reaching the publisher. Generally. Whereas 95% of what you'll find on the web is absolute bloody potato. And if you don't already know the basics of programming, you don't even know what you should be looking for.

What's a good language to start with?

Someone's going to shoot me for saying this, but I'm gonna say... Visual Basic 6.0.

Not sure where you can get a compiler anymore, though...

Why use out-of-date technolagy when you can use C# or VB.NET?

Probably easier to learn.
