Mystery Font!

Recommended Posts

All right; this one came from this GD&Q question. Sozo, CMD, and I seem to be font aficionados; I think that fonts can be amazing works of art when used correctly, and frustratingly maddening cliches when used incorrectly.

This forum game aims to be a fun way of raising awareness of fonts, their beauty, how they're classified, and how they should be used.

Here's how it works:

A font will be posted in image form (details below). If you think you know what it is, answer on this thread. Once the correct answer has been guessed, the first person who answered correctly gets to post another for others to guess. (Correct answers should be edited in to the post with the image). If you make a guess, please guess from memory. If several guesses have been made and none are correct, you may check the fonts on your system for hints; a while after that, you may check online font sites. If no one finds it at that point, it's just too darn hard and the person who posted it should post some hints. :-)

On an otherwise transparent .PNG, type 10-20 characters in a font of your choice. (Include mostly letters, please). It should be typed in black, and the .PNG should be approximately 300-600 pixels wide and about 100-200 pixels tall. Please also note that it should not include any special formatting (bold, italic, underline, etc.); nor should the kerning between letters be changed using spaces, move selection, etc. All clear?

---

I'll get things started. This is a pretty easy one.

It's a slightly overused, very common Titling Font. It is not designed for paragraph text, but for headline text. As you can see, it is a sans-serif with heavy weight.

EDIT: CMD was correct. 'Tis "Impact."

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

I believe that's Impact.

Rule question: I like guessing these from memory, but nowhere in your rules does it state what, if any external resources are allowed.

I am not a mechanism, I am part of the resistance;

I am an organism, an animal, a creature, I am a beast.

Quite so. It is Impact. Post yours!

As for the rule question: Good question, and I've addressed it.

Jolly-o!

This font is one of my personal favorites. It's a very clean, fairly straightforward sans-serif, but with monospace character widths - not all symbol bodies are of the same width, but as you can see by the example below, each block is of a fixed width, giving it clean, easily readable spacing for short-title text. I often use this font for headings.

To my knowledge, this font is not one of the default Windows fonts, but it is freely available on DaFont.com.

Well, it's obviously an LotR-style font. Could it be Hobbiton?
