Slow startup in x64 version

x64 version is great, but what I can't take is the time it takes to load up. 32bit version loads up instantly. x64 takes as much as 10 seconds!!! any way to make it load faster?

well, even if it is slower start up, lots of people say that PDN works better on 64x

8 seconds for me i have 64x

8 seconds for first startup, or for every startup?

If it takes 8 seconds, and then you close it and immediately reopen it, does it still take 8 seconds? For me it's instant (yes, on x64).

10 Seconds?!? OHMAIGAWD! How can you even stand to use a program that takes 10 WHOLE SECONDS to load? Gee, if I ever had to wait 10 seconds for anything, I think I'd blow a gasket. Hell, I might even start brushing my teeth with all that free time!

Ten seconds? Gosh, that's longer than these people took to think up their funny quips! ;-)

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

It's not uncommon for it to take ~5-10 seconds in a "cold" startup case. You'll have a lot of disk activity in this case. Depending on your system you may or may not have any audible indication of this. (for instance, laptops generally have quieter hard drives)

This performance characteristic is the same on 64-bit and 32-bit. The performance advantage for 64-bit is in rendering of layers' composition and effects.

  • 3 weeks later...

Rick, sorry for posting in the wrong section.

Yes, this is that cold start time that I posted. It takes only 1 second or so load for the second time. It probably has something to do with .NET libraries being too large on 64bit? I don't know...I'm not a programmer

But the issue is, sometimes I just want it to open once, edit something and save. Waiting for a whole 10 seconds (maybe slightly less, but you get the point...it is SLOW!) just for that is insane...

Is there a workaround...? I mean, not from within the program, but a tweak or something, to do in Windows?

(Mind you this is on Vista x64 with C2D, 4GB RAM....)

Wow, now thats multitasking! I've got this window, with two tabs, One IM, and Pdn. It still loads instantly for me.

OK, head over to Photoshop or GIMP, time their startups, and then come back here and try to keep complaining about Paint.NET's startup time.

I run into this myself on occasion. It's simply doing a lot of random-access disk I/O to load up Windows Forms (part of .NET). I have a Core 2 Quad QX6700 2.66 GHz with 4 GB of DDR2-800 RAM myself, and some recent and fast hard drives. But I also tend to have tons of stuff open including multiple Firefox windows, 1-2 copies of Visual Studio 2008, Outlook with a million e-mails in it (ok maybe only 50,000 but still), 1-2 copies of Excel, Expression Web, and multiple Virtual PC's using upwards of 2 GB RAM all by themselves (much easier to test on XP and in high-DPI that way!). My 8 GB upgrade is on the way from Newegg as we speak, and I desperately need it.

The solution? Buy a solid state hard drive. I hear they're down as low as $500 for a 16 GB nowadays ;) Or plug in a USB key and turn on ReadyBoost. Try defragmenting your hard drive. Put your page file on a separate physical hard drive from your Windows and Paint.NET installations (I have an 8GB pagefile on D:, and Windows/Paint.NET are on C:, for instance).

No, that won't affect startup performance.

I do not recommend doing that: if Paint.NET gets hungry for CPU time then it could make the rest of your system unusable. There's already code in there to adjust priority on a short-term basis to keep the user interface snappy and responsive, so there's no need to manually adjust it.
