Posters/ Combining Images

I'm a total newb to this and all graphics programs, so my questions might be stupid. :oops:

I want to know how to use the lasso and magic wand to select part of one photo, and place it into another photograph. I can't quite figure out how either of them work. I have several photographs, that I would like to make into a poster. I want to use one as my main background, and have the others zoomed out, and placed around the main photo, with their backgrounds made transparent.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

if off open all the images you want and a new image, then make your selection with the lasso tool, now copy the selection (Ctrl+C) then add a layer in your new image and paste the selection (Ctrl+V) now do this will all the photos, finally use a plugin like the feather plugin to blend the images better to the background

Okay, I got the lasso thing down. I know how to take part of a pic and paste it to another picture, or background. I still don't know how to make use the feather, although I now have it in my effects. How does it work, exactly?

The first one is the amount. The second one is to either shrink or grow the edges.
