How to make the Gradient tool leave the alpha values alone?

I'm trying to make myself a sig on a forum, and I want gradient text in it, and when I select the text, and execute the gradient, and it negates the alpha values, making it an un-anti-aliased jagged text.

Basically, I'm looking for a way to change the color of the text while leaving the alpha values untouched, any ideas?

And yes I used the search, if I missed the post that details it, post the link please.

Also, some of the text has internal parts that need coloured, which is why the anti-alias plugin would just cause some nasty issues.

Try Gradient tool in :AlphaChannel: mode (no selection)

Nope, just made a transparent streak along the page.

Well I made the text, added the gradient, didn't work. Added the transparent gradient, that didn't do much other than shade it. switched the mods, switched the layers about, not much change.

Maybe I'll try alpha masking it, never got round to putting it to the test

Yeah, thats exactly what I'm aiming for, except colored.

I use the same method as my post above.

Text on top layer. Use :AlphaChannel: on text with no selection.

Background on bottom layer.

Done.
