Paint.NET v3.20 Preview

Recommended Posts

Paint.NET v3.20

This release is still in the planning stages. We are hoping to include a metadata editor, HD Photo support, the ability to save and load presets for some adjustments (such as Curves), and major improvements for developers who want to write plugins. This release will also make use of and require the .NET Framework 3.0.

"...ability to save and load presets for some adjustments (such as Curves)"

REALLY? First I heard of that. This makes me even more impatient! :P

Umm, you can already save and load your curves settings by using Curves+ and/or ScriptLab...

I didn't know you could with curves+ (just saw the thing on top of it now)

Scriptlab I know, but it would be easier/quicker doing it in the curves (well I was excited for other adjustments/effects) window. Anyway, scriptlab will be more than enough for now.

*eats a milky way - Halloween done me good, and I didn't even go trick-or-treating xD

Fisherman's Friend, going back to topic :)

Paint.NET v3.20. This release is in the final stages of alpha development. New features include (...) a re-organized Effects menu...

 Source

What does this actually mean? I thought the ability to organize plugins was dropped for 3.20, so I assume it has some other meaning...?

:?:

Umm ... I think I was testing it out or something. I forget. This update has a lot of changes in the plugin system so it's important to know and/or fix compatibility stuff.

What's the "Crash" effect?

Sounds dramatic...

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

It's to test the new error handling stuff. It forces an access violation.

P.S. It's a plugin I wrote for testing purposes, it doesn't actually come with Paint.NET...

Wow I can't do anything without everyone noticing it immediately :)

"re-organized" means ...

Well, that looks really impressive. But there is something regarding the submenus which scares me. The point is all the submenus will get localized for non-English languages (I assume). When time goes on and new plugins are published (or re-puplished due to the new gorgeous effects system :D ) I predict that they will be made for the English submenus, and therefore e.g. German users will have "Künstlerisch" (= Artistic) and another "Artistic", which is created by a plugin. So all non-English PDN users will have doubled submenus, maybe around 17 submenus. Looks like I will have to run PDN in English for a while.

Can't anything be done to prevent this? I know most of the PDN users run it in English, but when you want to see how it looks now just swich your language with all plugins installed and look how your submenus are getting more. And then imagine how it will be with 3.20.

No. It is simply up to the plugin authors to either use the provided localized submenu names, or to not use them. You will simply need to bug the authors for an update. I'm not going to second guess plugin authors and place their plugins into a different submenu than they have specified. I believe this has already been discussed somewhere else.

Thanks for your fast and helpful reply, Rick. Well, as I want to use 3.20 (who wouldn't!?) and as I don't want to spam the plugin board with requests...

(BTW,

It is simply up to the plugin authors to either use the provided localized submenu names, or to not use them.

Ed Harvey <-> All the others

@BB: Yes, thank you, that sounds nice but codelab is only helpful if either the source code is available or the plugin is completely redone in the new codelab (what assumes that the "disturbing" plugins are made with codelab!). To be honest my "Blurs" menu (not the localized one) includes only two entries: "Feather" and "Gaussian Blur Channel" and I really would like to see them in the localized menu.

/BTW)

...I and all other non-English users have only two possibilities:

1.) Finding somehow a way to de-/recompile the plugins (.Net 2 SDK?) to fit into the correct subs.

2.) To live in interesting times.

Unless they published their source ^

Ok, now I have a questions...

This release will probably cause a lot of plugin authors to redo their plugins (add some small changes anyway), right? Which means we're going to have to redownload a lot of them, right?

*sets aside a chunk of time for doing this*
