removing unwanted background objects

Probably a better idea to just use the eraser tool to erase what you don't want to be in the picture. Make use of the generous undo facilities to step back as necessary. Then create a new layer, place it below (well, "on top" in the list, ours is kind of backwards) the picture, and fill it with whatever color you want.
