Unselected layer data for use in effects...

Recommended Posts

I didn't search before posting, so forgive me if this has been asked before. I would've searched, but I couldn't think of any good keywords...

Anyway, is it possible to reference data from layers other than the one selected when an effect is ran? (e.g, the hue, saturation or brightness values.)

the reason I ask is, I think it would be nice to have the option to just select one of your other layers when using effects like the Alpha Mask import plugin. I know that this would be in the same vein as layer masks, but I'm just not sure if this has been a part of anyone's thought process as of yet...

I do not think this is possible.

Of course, you can always access unselected pixels from the currently selected layer. But, I know that this will not satisfy your request. But, maybe it can get you thinking about a workaround.

Perhaps Rick or someone else more expirenced than me can give a definitive answer.

I figure using this in the Alpha Mask plugin would be similar to the merge layers function already in PdN, where instead your just looking at the brightness value of one layer and using that to compute the alpha value of another layer...

No. You cannot reference other layers.

Y'know, it would be nice if you could give us just a little glimmer of hope by adding the word "yet" to the end of that. It's only 4 more keystrokes!

I don't know why it isn't at Rick's "Popular Feature Requests" yet. It seems sooo promising a feature... :)
