Thank you @Pixey and @Tactilis for your comments. I should have been more specific in my post. I was looking for feedback on the 'texture' of each piece.

But I do appreciate the feedback on the coloring.

I'll have to think about this. It took me a couple of years to get this right. It's complicated. It's not that I don't want to share this technique; it will be challenging to write up.

For me, it's the same conclusion; the first is preferable by a long way.

 

IMO, the second has too much texture and, coupled with the lighting, it looks less realistic.

I was choosing the 'texture' when I chose the first one - that texture looks more authentic than the second one  

 

I totally understand about not doing a tute.  When I create things I go through so many machinations that I can never remember every step - which can be so frustrating sometimes.
