My rant for the day...

For the past two weeks, I've been remotely editing maps. Accessing the city's database is slow enough, but what frustrates me is the inability to save edits while I work.

Issue: Versioning

Example:

Lunch time rolls around and I am editing, let's say a parcel. I select save edits, and the file is updated into a master file. These edits will not show up until the next day. So when I return from lunch and want to edit that file, the program calls an "unedited version" of the file. If I edit this file and save it, it will overwrite the one I did prior to lunch.

Actuality:

We had a power flicker, and it shut down my remote connection (computer has battery backup, but not our internet connection). Since saving edits as I go, I lost two hours worth of work

If that made no sense to you, sorry., I'm sorry.

Here's my rant:

All day I've been hyped up about getting more content and members on my forum and was prepared to spend some time on the Forumer Forum to get fbucks.

(Currency used on the forum which can be traded for people linking to you, etc.)

The Forumer Forum and the main forum website for that matter, has been down all day and I was really looking forward to getting more fbucks.

Eh, oh well. Not a big deal

Feature request: Flux Capacitor

It would be Teh R0xx0rz!

You mean like that? Yeah, definitely rantworthy.

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

I have a rant. I don't know if I have been around here long enough to rant but here goes.

It really bugs me when I read tuts or something on here during the day at work and when I get home I can't find it again.

It really bugs me when I am reading a tut and get to the bottom of some 20 steps and the pic is a little box with a red x in the middle, or there is a link to the pic and when I go there I get an Error 404 Image not found.

Actually it really bugs me whenever I get the Error 404 thing!

But I do love Paint.Net. I am new, and haven't used it much, but what I see on here that can be done and know someone can tell me how to do it if I can't, is just great. I had never seen a user type forum for a software before. I think the support community (if that is what your group should be called) is just wonderful. I guess that makes up for the littler things.

I'm positive this does not frustrate everyone, and I may be the only one. I can not stand the abbreviation for tutorial, "tut."

I'm not criticizing anyone, and honestly, I think I used it once (maybe twice), But that was when I had thought that was how the PDN crew talked/typed.

I may have to go back and edit my posts to add the orial to tut.

I try to refrain from saying "tut" when I'm sure it is directed at a noob, just to minimize the possible confusion. But, I am a proponent of anything that lessens the number of key presses I have to make.

Personal "tut" count = 33

Personal "tutorial" count = 100

You may think me strange, but do you know what's been bugging me lately?

The word "dearth."

I'm not sure why, but recently in several posts here on the forum when I wanted to indicate an overabundance of something or other, the first word that comes to my mind is dearth.

It's a cool word, but it means exactly the opposite of what it sounds. A dearth is a critical shortage of something, but the word, possibly because of it's similarity to an amalgamation of deluge and wealth, sounds like it should mean an ample supply...

It's frustrating! Thankfully, I have the Answers extension for Firefox, where I can [Alt]+Click any word to show it's definition. That has saved me multiple times...

On a more positive note, that Project 86 CD came in today. It would have been nice to get it on release date, but it was worth the wait. :D

As far as the "tut" "tutorial" battle, I too despise the shortened "tut." The only place I use tut is the tutref (tutorial reference) table in my database for CMD Sketchpad.

Edit: it -> in

1. I'm just fond of these lolcatz.

2. If 3 noobies on 4 wouldn't speak like that...

3. I posted more this week / month, to say more useless things.

Hey, we're in Rants here.

No. Way. I've just seen Bob. And... *poof!*—just like that—he disappears into the mist again. ~Helio

Rant:

Today, to my dismay, I banned a user for posting a link to a keygen site for PS in my forum (if you don't know what those sites are, the better you are.). When I went to the Forumer Forum, I received a PM from another user asking why I banned a user on my forum. I explained politely and sent my PM. I just went back to the Forumer Forum to find a nasty PM in my inbox which contained cussing and otherwise extremely rude comments saying he say no comment with a link. I removed the link from the bad post.

Now I have sent a PM to the "Super-Mod" of the Forumer Forum, (can't remember her name) to see if she can help me any. I would normally just press the 'report' button but PM's don't have those. I'm worried because you not really allowed to PM the officials, but this isn't really a topic you can post in the forum.

Oh well... lets just hope he doesn't spam my forum or anything ans that this is the last I hear from him.

were to start ???

Lets start with UNIX.

Why in the hell do I have to do a UNIX test on paper ahhhhhh. It is UNIX and for every command there got to be 30 options to go with it, let alone arguments. Like you got to be nuts to think I can remeber 150+ commands with about 30 options for each one. I do better if you let me use the computer. Like any OS you know what your at when using it, not try to do it on paper. Plus why do you think the makers of UNIX made the man command, why because they can't even remeber every command and option for it, so they made the man command to go to the manual. Arr - other then that UNIX is kinda fun.

Next crowds / groups of people who stop in front of you to TALK TO ONE ANOTHER !. I hate this and at times I have wanted to push people down for being an idiot. Yes I am talking about you people who are walking in front of me in Wal-Mart and just stop to talk in the middle of the floor. Then what happens to me, I have to stop and try and ask nice if I and the 1500 people behind me can get through. You know what next time I not going to ask and I going to be a jerk and push you out of the way and as you call me rude I going to say "If I wanted to wait in a line made by people talking to one another I would have gone to the bank".

Ok, this is like three days old but hey, this is a big rant.

My city's flooding.

We have the RAF evacuating people out, people are dying, homes are being destroyed, people are stranded in buildings or at remote locations, downed electricity (no internet!) and I'm sure you can imagine the rest. Yes, this is Britain and we should be used to rain and yes, this is probably more common for others and that I should think myself lucky we live on a hill, but even still this is Sheffield and we haven't had floods like this in decades possibly even more time so this is quite unusual and quite a shock.

What makes it worse is that my dog's veterinary appointment can't be held as that area is inaccessible so that means she won't be having the stitches out of her eye and she'll still have a bally cone around her neck.

My rant for the week.
