Kemaru
Thanks for the sentiments, folks. _____ There is a civilian alternative. I think it's a brilliant system, but I don't see why it is mandatory for men only. If it is so great, why not have everyone do it? I disagree with the fact that Åland residents and Jehovah's witnesses are exempted from military and civilian service, as well. I don't want to partake in a system that discriminates, even if the end results were positive in the grand scheme of things. To make a difference, one must protest. In a way, I admire the Finns' adherence to rules and regulations, even if the rules were flawed. Daniels
The Selective Services System here in the US is somewhat similar, though most who register don't actually go into military service. Every male has to register between the ages of 18 and 25 or face prison or a fine. Even conscientious objectors have to register (they submit an exemption claim if they are drafted). Females, of course, do not. It's been that way since the '70s. And we don't have alternative service either: it's either register, or face the penalty. Jehovah's witnesses are exempted from military and civilian service, as well. It's the same way here. Other Christian denominations have to register, though. It just isn't right. MikeRobe
Interestingly Jehovah's Witnesses have long been the subject of persecution. In fact, in South Korea, Russia, and the like, many have been imprisoned for neutrality. Some countries just don't want people to be neutral. (Also, I am, in fact, a Jehovah's Witness ) Quote I baked another one...

barbieq25
Pop over here Kemaru & you can come to work with me. Your choice of doing the admin stuff or teaching the students. They're working on a rough draft of collating all of the research done so far on tattoos. There is never enough time in a day for me unless I am stuck at the hospital waiting for a specialist to see my Mum. The last 15 minutes to morning tea time takes forever & same with the last 30 minutes to lunch time. Rest of the time flies Quote Knowledge is no burden to carry. EathanMarkson
I hate it when (at least it seems on the other forums I've been on, not pointing fingers at people here) forum admins/mods always seem uptight about bumping any post older than a couple days. Ego Eram Reputo
We have a limit of three months(ish). I'm not rigid about this, nor do I think the other Mods are. Several areas have no limit. Like this thread, plugins and tutorials. Commenting on a feature request from 2006 is bound to run into trouble.... RFX
@$&%.... Worst year ever.... I'll be glad when it's over. Grampa had a stroke, my cat passed away a few days ago, cousin in law shot to death and my aunt in law (his mom) was so devastated that she also passed away. Normally I'd say even negative experiences can be turned to positive experiences if something was learned from them. In this case, there isn't anything positive that I can think of. /end rant. RFX
Thanks everyone! That was quite a bad year however I also placed myself in a lot of bad positions, made a lot of bad choices, and in the end paid for all those things but learned hard life lessons in the process. I spent most of my time doing things for others but its time I do things for my own self as I'm quickly learning that my needs are just as important. It's just foreign to me as a buddhist because I've never really had any needs up until recently and the only need I do have is to be content, if that makes sense. It's like I'm in a constant battle between heart and mind..."Cognitive dissonance" is the term which best describes it. A simultaneous mix of emotions / thoughts which contradict each other. It's like when you're hungry yet can't eat a thing, exhausted yet can't sleep, or what I usually have, millions of words to be spoken yet not a single one will come out./end rantps: I'm getting better at minimizing my novel length posts. lol
