Rant: There's something wrong with my laptop. It has on numerous occasions shut itself down, all of a sudden and for no apparent reason. Then when I turn it on there's no sound. The sound comes back if I restart or restore the system and then it will either work perfectly for a few days or it will shut itslef down in an hour or two (sometimes less). It happens most often while watching videos like YouTube etc. I am very confused and infuriated about this  Probably a virus

No sound, or no sound on Youtube? Do you get sound from other programs?

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

No sound at all. But it comes back if I restart.

I thought at first it might be overheating but I wasn't sure. What happens is, I start watching a video, it starts lagging for a while and then the screen turns black and it turns off. (Now that I think of it I think it only happens when watching videos...)

If it is an overheating problem, should I get it fixed or is there a simpler solution?

Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

if you didn't modify your laptop the chance of overheating is quite small, however if the weather is hot or when something is blocking the opening for the fan the chance of overheating becomes larger.

History repeats itself, because nobody was paying attention the first time.

I had the same problem happen to me with no sound playing on YouTube about six months back. The problem behind the solution was that I needed to update my Adobe Shockwave player. Also check to see if you have the latest driver updates. ;)
