Rants *enter at own risk*

Recommended Posts

Rant: Me and Pyro are selected M1 testers. The release was delayed for about two months (was suppose to be out in February, we still dont have it) and come to find out they lost the source code. Thankfully, I think I may have saved the day. I let Michael Ciarlo know that refractor will decompile builds, still no reply though. I pray for Cairo soon!

It is far from perfect.

Apparently they did, but were having problems with it in January. This developer got most of it done with promises of release in February. They then lost contact and then lost the source. That is when they made plans of redevelopement and began hiring more programmers.

My Rant for this evening? Spam-bots.

As you may know, I've written my own blogging application in PHP. It's no WordPress-killer by any means, but I wrote it myself, so it's special, and I use it as my testing grounds to teach myself interactive PHP.

Well, the system was originally built with a naively open structure - whatever the user put into the text box was placed into the database (save for the requisite string-cleaning to protect against SQL insertion - I am not a moron*). Any HTML was allowed, and nothing was checked, and some spammer took advantage of that.

I didn't think I was big enough yet to have to worry about spammers, but I logged in this afternoon to find 52 consecutive spam messages, each containing about 20 links to pornographic content, all in my fourth blog entry. I deleted them all, but the script was still going. Thankfully, it was decidedly slow, as I only got about two new spam posts per hour. I locked the first blog post that was contaminated, but the script just moved on to the next, forcing me to lock all posts until I could deal with it in a more flexible fashion (I was in class at the time, and I couldn't write a dynamic string parser in the middle of class).

Glory be, I now have a system up and running which allows me to block posted comments via IP and via URLs placed in the user fields. If you have a minute, I'd appreciate if you could go test it for me by trying to post a comment on any one of my blog entries. If you encounter a problem, and you aren't the guy who's been spamming me, please let me know. The link to my blog is in my sig.

Bah. I hate spam. If I wanted to look at drivel, I'd look it up myself. *heads off to DrivelTube*

I did. You're misunderstanding some of what they're saying.

EDIT: Actually, they're being quite vague... it's possible I'm misunderstanding what they mean as well.

Yeah, I think something more went down. If I lost my entire project that I had been working on for the past year, I wouldnt simply let it go and hire on more programmers to start again. I dont think this guy was simply 'let go'.

Well, at least you learned a fairly "cheap" lesson. Didn't have to have a DDS attack or a complete overwhelming of everything or your server shut down, or...

Hey, Dan! You need a mod! *volunteers* :-)

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.
