A Debate for the Ages- Firefox vs Opera vs IE and more!

Recommended Posts

Yes I know this is a bit dated, but this article tells why Opera is better than Firefox. Some don't apply anymore, but most do.

But still, why does everybody ignore these:

Let's put it like this:

Users that have used Opera for more than FF like it better because they find the FF interface confusing, after being so attatched to the style of Opera, and vice-versa

Arguement closed.

Now lets bash IE :P

IMO Opera IS better than FF for the following reasons:

1. for those of u who like o conserve hard drive space Opera is only about 9mb, smaller than FF

2. Opera has email, IRC chat, and a bittorrent client (although substandard), which FF lacks.

3.Opera has magic wand which autofills all internet registration forms....sadly if u get spyware this is a gold mine for ur info

4. Opera has widgets in place of FF's Extensions, which have more of an entertainment mindset than FF's all-around +400 extensions.

5. Opera has voice capabilities, if u selected the address bar spoke 'myspace', it would take u to myspace.com and it speaks text when ur too lazy to do it ur self

6. Opera is faster

7. opera can remember the last sites u were on b4 u closed ur browser

8. Search engines. with opera u can add searches to ur browser and put them handy in the top right so u wont have to go to wikipedi/google/yahoo to search

9. thumbnails when ur cursor hovers over a tab

10. mouse gestures are standard

11. server name completion no having to hit ctrl + enter or typing in www/com just type in the meat of the website name and it takes u ther

12. opera retains about the same disk usage no matter how many tabs u have (0-6)

13.takes 7 seconds less time to start up than FF

14. Opera was the only web browser to have succeeded in the acid2 web browser test

BTW has any tried FF 3 Alpha?

All this is available in firefox, maybe not the useless stuff though.

Here is my strongest point yet:

Opera has passed Acid 2, and Firefox has not. And I don't want to here FF fanboys screeching "Well Firefox 3 alpha has!" Two things:

A. It's alpha!

B. By the time it gets released it might not be compatible. That happened to Safari and iCab (although finally after 2 years they are now compliant)

Take that! If you want proof take your little FF's to the Acid 2 homepage!

They're using a new rendering engine the Gecko 1.9, amongst other stuff.

Take a gander at the Wiki.

EDIT: For the fight against Opera:

Some article[/url]":97b74]As an Opera fan, I feel compelled to point out that many of the most useful feature requests have been present in that browser for some time now, such as the ability to save text entered in forms so that the user can hit the back button to return to a form entry page without losing all the text.

Mac OS usage is very small in comparison to windows OS, hence the IE advantage. Mac IE sucks.

Don't care for acid 2 test, that tests a few things but not everything, opera fails in other simple things as in when it changed my page to white for no reason what so ever, all that occurred was an ajax call and some dhtml changes that did nothing to the page color but opera still decided to change it.

That has nothing to do with Acid 2. Also, because more people use it doesn't mean it's better. Mac OS X is 10x better than Microsoft Windows, yet 90% use the latter. So case, not closed!

If I were you, it would be most safe not to start a debate on that.

As for your little test, that shows nothing but technical components, dose it show how the browser looks? The ease of use? Dose it show anything but some flaws that may be in it?

Context is in the hands of the beholder. How you take it is how you take it.

im sry but htat wesite explained absolutely nothing only javascript and broswer usage statistics

to uhhh quote myself the amount of ppl that use a certain browser means nothing...it just means the public is more familiar with it and prefers to use it. For example, just because the ipod video has more sales than most portable video players doesn't mean its better. the Creative Zen Vision W has bigger screen, less price, and more features BUT ive never seen anybody use it

Sorry Opera missed the web browser boat a long time ago, esp. since they started off with Advertisements in their browser as well as it being shareware. The boat is now too far for opera to catch up to, unless it doesn't something amazing and takes a speed boat over, it doesn't have much chance of success.

IPOD made the boat and left before anyone can get on. Btw check out the iphone for larger screen video playback.

Can I ask how this page hasn't been referenced yet? Detailing how even IE is safer than Firefox (1.x) :P .

I used to be a major FF fan, telling everyuone "OMFG SWTICH TO FF NOW." But then my computer started freezing up whenever I used it. Memory leaks kept the thing from running right. Though, I only have 256MB of RAM, but still, it was annoying. Thus, I switched to Opera. Been happy since, as I also actually get barely spyware and viruses now that I use it. FF and IE had been giving my computer all that stuff, while Opera hasn't.

Sure, yes, I miss all those cool extensions/plugins Firefox has (like DownThemAll!, Gmail Checker and BugMeNot). Opera can replicate most of them through custom javascript input (even GreaseMonkey scripts, too) and Widgits. Though, it just isn't the same (That gmail widigt barely works, as it states I have 22 emails when I have none :? ).

The only real con I find with Opera though is that it can't run pages like FreeWebs correctly (as in the page editors) because of how it saves the cache and whatnot. Thus, this is the only real reason I keep Firefox around (Can't really stand using IE either way, so...).

lulz for first post being in a debate topic.

Could be for the fact that FF is now 2.0.0.4, many version after 1.x.

Also with all your problems what was the version you were running and when (ish)?
