IZArc

Recommended Posts

I'll create my own test for it. It will contain 1 wallpaper, 1 pdf, 2 Office documents, 3 executables, 5 text documents, and a pdn just for kicks. I'll put them in well thought-out folders and locations for it to be archived in. I will test it with the folowing file types:

zip

rar

7z

Whatever IZArc uses

Nope.

Okay, now I have a 21.5 MB (22,643,129 byte) folder ready to archive. I may upload one of the archives so you can see what was in it. One of them is one of the many versions of my sig (pdn) and I also have a doc of pi to 2 million places (over 6 MB).

EDIT: I just found out that IZArc just uses other compression file types and not their own.

My comparison results:

7z (7zip): 9.12 MB (9,563,191 bytes)
7z (IZArc): 9.12 MB (9,565,058 bytes)

RAR (WinRAR):	15.8 MB (16,581,948 bytes)

TAR (7zip): 21.6 MB (22,656,000 bytes)
TAR (IZArk): 21.6 MB (22,661,120 bytes)

ZIP (7zip): 15.9 MB (16,722,871 bytes)
ZIP (IZArk): 16.2 MB (17,075,735 bytes)

-Folder/archive contents-

Main folder:

.doc (26 KB)
.exe (3.38 MB)
.pdn (904 KB)
.png (3.14 MB)
.txt (5.26 KB)
.txt (39.5 KB)
.txt (424 KB)
folder1	(3.39 MB)
folder2	(10.2 MB)

folder1:

.exe (3.38 MB)
.txt (3.27 KB)
.txt (3.9 KB)

folder2:

.exe (3.38 MB)
.doc (6.83 MB)
.pdf (70.9 KB)

7z wins. Better file type and better program to compress it on.

It may support it, but it doesn't archive with it.

ARC is a file format by SEA (System Enhancement Associates) that was very popular before Phil Katz's introduction of the ZIP format.

I like 7-zip. So far, I've never found an archive that I couldn't open with it, (not counting passworded ones).

I never use the GUI (it looks like a 10 year old made it) but the shell extensions it adds to the right-click menus are oh-so-handy!

Well I actually tried all of the options and the ones in the results were the smallest ones I could get. Though I can say that (depending on the settings) 7zip is slower than IZArc.

BTW, 7zip has twice as many options as IZArc.
