How on earth have we managed to end up with idiots running such important jobs through out the UK?

How on earth have we managed to end up with idiots running such important jobs throughout the world?

The smart people are smart enough to know they don't WANT that kind of job.

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

I know this isn't a tech-support forum, and I'm sorry if I'm breaking any rules:

I tried to turn on my computer, and it goes about its way just fine until right after the boot screen (Windows Logo on black background with loading bar). After that, everything goes black and the computer stops loading. (Monitor stays on and doesn't go to sleep- meaning there's still an input signal)

I've looked at plenty of sites to try to find an answer, but they all suggested either checking the monitor, which I did (works fine), check the graphics card, again, as far as I can tell it works, and then boot through Safe Mode and lower the res/ etc. The problem with the latter is that when I try to sartup through safe mode, all the usual text flashes across the screen, but it then stops and doesn't actually load through. VGA Mode as well...

I'm running Windows XP SP2 with an HP Pavilion a1888x, 160 gb HDD, 1.5 gigs ram, ATI x1300 graphics card, and HP vs17 LCD Monitor.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

How can I fix my problem?

Simon- nope, no new software. And I dunno about the warranty (pretty sure it's shot)

Sozo- both.

This same system has been working fine for a couple of years, I just turned it off normally Saturday night, and Sunday morning it was messed up...

So Sozo, you want me to take out my Video card basically? I'm not very hardware savvy.

No, take the monitor cord (the end that currently should be plugged in to your graphics card), and plug it into the integrated graphics port on your computer (the port that should be built into your computer).

I saw about that, and unfortunately I don't.

Would I burn it myself from somewhere else? Like the laptop I am typing from? I have a XP Pro iso, but it's on my computer...

Sozo, I am trying that out.

I'm having trouble getting an input signal... I think my cord might be faulty. (Though it works on the laptop)

Edit- I can't even get power to the monitor now... I'll get back to you guys later when I have some of the basics resolved :? :)

Alright, I unplugged the video cord from the videocard and plugged it into the tower itself, assuming that's where the integrated one is. When I did this, the monitor displayed a "no Input signal" warning, and then switched to sleep.

I'm sure it I had both ends plugged in well enough, so why couldn't it find a signal from the integrated card? As far as I can tell my ports are fine - I know the cord works because I used it for the laptop, so where's the problem?

The integrated graphics may have been turned off. Try to get into the BIOS, check under Built in Peripherals, and turn it on if it isn't. It should be working after that. Otheriwse, exchanging graphicscards is the easiest thing to do after (re)placing RAM imho.

However I did try downloading SP3 about a month ago, unsucessfully (installed but windows still said it was running sp2).

I don't know how that would be giving off side-effects this much later in time...

The reason I suggested switching ports is that I had the same problem on an older computer of mine, and the problem was solved by switching temporarily to the integrated graphics. I believe the problem had arisen after a OS reinstall.
