Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center installed.

It stuck for long at 84% on two occasions, applying computer settings and finalizing stuff.... it felt like an eternity waiting for 85%... :x

Mine stuck on 71% for what seemed like a life time, I was expecting an Epic Fail.

Finally got it to install. I don't even know how much it changed from Windows 8. Time to do some research.

I dread the day I have to get a new PC...I don't like Windows 8 at all. I guess I'm just too used to 7...

I still have a Windows 7 Laptop that will always be a Windows 7 machine. 8 is good, but more biased towards touch screen.

7 has a "good to be home" feeling to me, things that I can find and use, all in a start menu that I understand, an OS that should have been expanded upon more :)

Take it from someone who has Windows 8 pro...I <snipped> hate it. It is catered more toward touchscreen.  The only reason I had to install Windows 8 was because the original hard drive on my laptop finally kicked the bucket and made its travel to the great scrapyard in the sky.  On the good side, though, I have a 1 TB hard drive, so I have a long, long way to go before I fill it up.

The other bad side of Windows 8 Pro is I cannot upgrade to 8.1.  *sigh*  If only I had switched to Ubuntu...

8 updates to 8.1 for free. Why can't you?

I've visited and revisited Ubuntu land many times since its early days and wow it still sucks a lot. Every time, it works great running from the live CD or installed in a VM but whenever I install it to a physical hard drive there's some infuriating new problem that makes it completely unusable.

I dual-booted my home PC: Win7 and Ubuntu.  Ubuntu works fine (except for some weird glitch that blacks out the login screen every once in a while), but I never use it.  No real reason, other than when I'm booting it up to work I always think "I might need Creative Suite or PdN today..." and when I'm booting it up for gaming, I need Steam.  So other than for work and gaming, I use it all the time.  :-)

But I'm really looking forward to getting Win8.1.  I've used it pretty regularly on computers I don't own, and aside from some minor annoyances (which I'm sure I can acclimate to - Win7 has just as many, they're just different ones) I think it's a great OS.  Win8 was kind of a misstep - I think they released it a little too early - but 8.1 is a fully-baked, nice-looking system with some pretty sweet features and fairly surprising flourishes.  Though I will admit that sometimes it doesn't feel like it's intended to be used with a mouse.

Unless you're running Windows RT, everything I see on the Microsoft site says that any copy of Win8 can get 8.1.

I remember almost all of the old-timers of this forum. Even if they're not active anymore. I just recently came back about about 2 months ago after a 2 1/2 year absence.

Make a file .txt on desktop, change the extension to .~sy then try to find it in  Win7. No result. I use Everything Search for that.

Make the same thing in XP and will be found instantly.

The .~sy extension is used from PC Schematic for symbol backup files. Sometimes I need to delete these files and Win7 are not found it at all.

If you open the Windows Store, there should be a giant tile on the very left saying you can upgrade - if that's there, then you should be able to. It's what I'm doing right now.

You do have to download update KB2871389 before the 8.1 tile shows up.
