Remove white kanji from foreground

I have a few jpgs of cartoons from Japan. I want to remove the kanji writing and redo the background to approximate the correct colors and lines.

Is there a way to remove the writing, in white, in one operation?

It looks like a lot of editing, I would do it one caracter at a time. You may use select and delete method or you could use effects as Color to Alpha, Replace color, Color replacer, ... Look at this post.

 

Edit: I forgot, there is also Eliminate Dark/Light effect.
