Help - Not save what I did.

I brought in a picture. Then using the eraser. Erase the background.

Save the file. When I import into another program the background is still there eventhough Paint.NET show the background erased. What I am I doing wrong.

Make sure you're saving in a format that retains transparency. Formats like JPG do not have an alpha channel, so if you import it into another program as a JPG, it will have a white background.

I would suggest using PNG for images that need transparency.

When you save (File > Save As ...), make sure to select the PNG file format in the dropdown. It handles transparency the best.
