Cleaning up the Tutorials section of the forums

Recommended Posts

Today I was browsing through the tutorials section here on the forum, looking to learn some new techniques. I was pretty sad to see so many of them are suffering from image link rot; making them unusable.

EX:

http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/13369-how-to-add-cool-motion-effects-to-images/

http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/14142-matted-gold-photo-frames/

I think it would be good to get rid of this cruft, as they serves no purpose as far as I can tell. They can also give the false impression to new comers that this forum is nothing but junk tutorials. I'm not sure if it would be good to purge the threads (affects post count?), but maybe move them to a archive/dead section.

Anyway, just my humble opinion and thoughts. I don't claim to have all the answers. Perhaps it would be good to have a forum moderator to comment and weigh in on this.

Both tutorials date back to 2009.  As pointed out, the images are missing.  I've locked them.

Please make me or another Mod aware when tuts die.  That way we can revive them (if worthy) or lock them.

Some imagehosts change over extended periods of time and hotlinking is always an issue as more and more time passes. I've had to update the one tut I did a few times due to just that issue. I feel bad for photobucket users as they get removed the most. I used to use Imageshack but they recently changed from a free service to premium membership requirements then moved to ServImage. There is a feature on ServImage where you can integrate free imagehosting to phpbb forums just like this one via an added  button on the toolbar that also allows the image dimensions to be set. It's perfect for places like this one.

I don't know why people are down on Photobucket. It's all I've ever used and never had a problem. My first posted images on this forum are almost eight years old and still showing a-Ok.

When I see complex and well written tuts I sometimes ask for a PDF to be attached. This is great insurance against losing the tut images. See this tut for an example http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/19117-the-subterranean-copypaste-blues/

@toe_head2001 has submitted a (long) list of tuts that need some attention. I'm working my way through this list as time allows.
