Rick Brewster
Updates require administrator rights because installation requires administrator rights. At this time we're not investing a lot of time into engineering a more robust solution that would allow you to, for instance, type in the administrator password when you do a manual update check. This is also in place for deployment scenarios so that normal users are using the version of Paint.NET that their network administrator has deployed to them, and so that there isn't a random subset of systems that has a different version. However, so that we can figure out how to steer this feature in the future, please tell us how you are installing/deploying Paint.NET and a rough outline of how your user accounts are set up (don't give me passwords, of course, I'm just interested in usage scenarios ). For example, some people are ahead of the curve, so to speak, and are running with non-Admnistrator accounts. Eventually we should also have a release that plays well with Vista's UAP technology, but that is a ways down the road.
