Rick Brewster
Paint.NET v2.5 is a major release that adds a lot of functionality over v2.1. A lot of these features are there for completeness' sake: an image editor that can't scale selected regions just feels incomplete, for instance. Many of them are there because they've been highly requested: measurements in inches and centimeters, and support for translation to other languages, for instance. A lot of work has also been put into improving the performance in many areas. As previously mentioned, our schedule puts us on track for a final release of v2.5 on November 30th. At that time we will release the normal installer, the 'full' installer that comes with .NET, and the source code. We're going to finish coding all new features by the end of this month, and then spend all of November fixing bugs and reworking and rewriting our help/documentation system. Since we only have roughly 3 1/2 weeks left for new feature work, we sat down and prioritized our remaining feature list and we had to decide what wouldn't make it. So, over the next few weeks, you'll see the following new features. These are confirmed as having a 100% chance of making it into the v2.5 release: * Much better GIF saving quality* Simple refinements to the Text Tool. It will have better rendering, and the ability to move text before committing it.* Curve tool for drawing bezier curves -- Now stop asking for it already * Radial and Zoom blur effects* Curves adjustment (color curves, not "line" curves)* Reworked help system (see description below)The following features have been cut for this version, and thus have a 0% chance of making it in to v2.5, but are still in our pile of features we'd like to do in the future: * Color Palette, which will compliment the Color Wheel functionality.* Extra refinements to the Text Tool. These include the ability to select regions of text for cut/copy/paste, rich formatting, and who knows what else.* 8-bit saving support for BMP, PNG, and TGA images* Remove Noise effect(s)* Gradients* Metadata editor* Polygon line and select tools* MDI (multiple document interface)We just don't have the time to do these right now. As for the "reworked help system," we've decided not to bundle the help file with the normal download anymore. By cutting this out, the download drops to a total size of about 1 MB. What we will do instead is have our help documentation available online, with the option of downloading and saving it locally. We're also rewriting out help because, honestly, it's in terrible shape.
