Is there a way to access to the alpha channel?

Is there a way to modify the alpha channel? I would like to be able to do something like this: Select everything except black pixels, paste them into the alpha channel(automatically converts to greyscale) and then apply radial blur, etc... on the alpha channel only. I could even selectively modify the channel, just like I was working with a regular layer. Is this functionality possible? Thanks. By the way, nice little program.
