Text Alignment and Word Wrap?

Recommended Posts

Greetings all... somewhat new to Paint.net...

I have a number of textures of marble, stone, rock... much of which I use in construction projects within Second Life where I am a Builder.

I have a small project in the works were someone has hired me to produce a stone structure; that has some text engraved into the stone.  I have the text typed up in MS Word.  But when I copy/paste that into Paint.net; there is no left/right/center alignment; and the text has no 'word wrap'... it just pastes it all as one single reeealllllly long single spaced line... like there is no bounding box to contain it.  Further more, I am not sure how I could make it appear as though it were 'engraved' ...

Now I do know how to make/add Layers... I use Paint.net often to manipulate many of my existing Second Life textures that I buy from within Second Life, and upload onto my computer to 'tweak' them.  Sometimes I'll add an alpha transparency layer of Spanish Moss to a Stone Wall, for example, then re-upload that back into SL.. and I now have a building with stone walls, and spanish moss hanging over the walls to give it more unique look.

So I know I can create a "layer" of Text, that can then be added over a stone or marble texture image...

But I can't figure out how to get that text to wrap or center, or appear engraved

How would I acquire these features, is there a plugin that does all this for text?

You can try to do it with bevel and use alternate direction so it looks like it is carved into the base image. I can do this with PS styles, but that is not what you want. There is a plugin called object align for the text. Sorry, do not remember which pack it is part of. Somebody will soon tell you;Good crew here.

Not to sound to dumb.. . but how do I use "bevel"; I dont see anything like that.  I did find a plugin tool that has Emboss and Relief effects that I think might do it; but how to do do the bevel suggestion?

I also figuref out how to do Text Alignment, that one was right under my nose the whole time and I'm just blind! lol

But I still need to figure out how to get some sort of word wrap feature so the pasted text stays within the boundries of the layer I'm going to make; as well as I need to make the layer so its background is alpha/transparent but the text remains solid.

You don't have to copy text from Word. PDN has a built-in text tool that includes features like centering. You will have to hit enter when you reach the end of a line, because it does not wrap.

As for the engraving, there is a tutorial somewhere on this forum for that exact thing. I'll have a browse-around to see if I can find it for you.

Actually... Visual...

Your Avatar image, is basically what I want to create... you have the "VR" appearing to be engraved into a Stone Texture.

I want to do that with text that is copy/pasted from MsWord or Open Office Writer; or notepad/wordpad, etc... but also make it appear slightly aged.

Soo.. I have to basically go and completely retype the entire page of text into PDN and manually create my own word wrapping effect?

I did that one with PS. You can do something similar with PDN. Make a square with your stone texture. Select the entire square in bevel it. Make a new layer. Select a color from the stone texture with the dropper and type text on it and change the font. Select each letter with the wand holding control key until they are ll selected. Bevel and use alternate direction and reduce the strength. You can do some additional tweaking by going to layer properties and selecting multiply, color burn or whatever looks best to you. Or, just leave it be. Good luck.
