alextheflamand
Hey guys, I am new on here, and I wanted to ask you guys a question about fixing color fringing. I am an amateur photographer (I'm only a teen, lol) and recently got a Canon Powershot SX500 IS to take with me to Bermuda on vacation. I took some pictures, and when I looked back at them on my computer I noticed some color fringing. It's not very apparent from looking at the full picture, but when looking up close you can see it. I've tried using plugins for Paint.NET and have even bothered to try other image processing tools, but nothing so far. The best I could get was Darla's Plugin for GIMP, and that only helped a little. I tried the Conditional Hue/ Saturation plugin found on the only other thread about color fringing, and I couldn't seem to get it to work. Here is the photo (resized with a simple stamp) with the edges with fringing. Anything will be helpful! Alex
TechnoRobbo
That's actually called Chromatic Aberration. Very noticeable on cameras with small image pickups. Pickups where the image pixel sensors are closer to the size of the circle of confusion (the point where the eye can't tell something is not focused). Larger cameras exhibit it too, but the resolution is so high it's negligible. The effect is most noticeable when the cameras Iris is wide open and the light is bent more (refracted) by the edges of the lens. If you look to the edges of the photo the effect is quite noticeable and in reverse on the opposite sides of the photo. You may be able to reduce the effect by separating the photo into 3 layers, Red Green and Blue. Then shifting them relative to the other. But as I pointed out, the effect reverses as you cross the center of the lens and gets more extreme the farther a part of the image is from the center of the lens. 2 Quote Go out there and be amazing. alextheflamand
OK, thanks! By the way, a little update, the plugin that I use in GIMP does work very well. I just didn't test it enough. I'm only having trouble on this image because the color of the chromatic aberration is the same color as the water, so when I get rid of it, the water turns grey! lol. I'll be sure to try and do that.
TechnoRobbo
That's my point - you can fix some of the picture but never all of the picture since the effect varies through out the image. Sounds like the gimp tool is a modified red eye reduction recoloring specific sections of the image. Edited August 4, 2013 by TechnoRobbo Quote Go out there and be amazing. TechnoRobbo
Here this should give you a pretty good idea of how to play with the Chromatic aberration since it shows you how to create it. 1 Quote Go out there and be amazing. Red ochre
Interesting video TR - perhaps zooming each layer (B,G,R) by a slightly different (tiny) amount may help correct the colour aberration? - assuming the image is not cropped first (so middle of lens is middle of image and amount of aberrarion proportional to distance from middle).By the way there is a 'Color Aberation' plugin that displaces B,G,R seperately but in a linear way (use 'offset unit' = pixel).Just thoughts - good luck Alex (good photos btw). It just created more aberration. Is there some way that I can desaturate the cyan color around the border of the rock while keeping the cyan of the surrounding landscape, sort of like separating the foreground from the background and then desaturating it? I've heard that's one way to do it, but I just don't know how... Thanks again!

Red ochre
Alex, I've had a play with your images - I got reasonable results using the built in Surface blur on a small radius. It seems to help with the jpeg compressed look too, but will loose some detail - perhaps mix a surface blurred layer with the original? Quote Red ochre Plugin pack.............. alextheflamand
Thanks guys! I actually found a simpler solution: just select the aberration itself with the lasso/ free form select tool and desaturate. It didn't get rid of it completely, but it did decrease it to an almost indistinguishable level. Thanks for your help guys! (BTW I'm leaving this up for people wondering about chromatic aberrations). Thanks again! Alex.
