I am a sim racer and I used to use a DDS converter when I had Win XP.  Now I have Win 7 and the converter no longer works.  So..... I am using Paint.net now.  It opens the file but you can hardly see the car.  It has a checkered cover.

How do I remove this so I can see the car really well ?

The "checkered cover" indicates transparency. It seems your image is almost completely transparent. To make it more opaque, use the transparency plugin in BoltBait's plugin pack
