My Entry. It is as far as I know a "fictitious band" :)

Edited to remove clipart and now removed custom brushes.

Nitenurse, but Is clip art not stock images? I don't know myself. :P

Just to play it safe I have replaced the clipart with custom brushes :)

Nitenurse, I don't think it should make a difference how it gets stuck on one's image.

But, I liked your idea and used custom brush also. ;)

EER has convinced me that I needed to make changes to my entry.

Thank you for your input, I really was unsure about what was illegal.

Interesting discussion developing!

To me, "stock image" refers to any image that you did not create yourself from scratch.

This would include clipart, photos (of any kind), fonts (when not used as typed text i.e. symbols and icons), icons and anything downloaded for the purpose.

Your previously created images would be acceptable as components in a new "stockless" creation so long as they too were all original (therefore stockless).

Discuss...

EER, I thought so too, but the use of custom brush made me think, well maybe. And I'm glad you brought up the use of fonts as I have made a few little creatures from a couple of letters so, guess I gotta watch where to use them.

I'll fix my image right now.

No wait. This is a conversation piece. I'm inviting discussion not doling out new rules.

As for fonts - I'm specifically referring to fonts that contain little clipart characters. Making an image element from ordinary text characters would be Ok in my book e.g. those nice repeating characters that are transformed into jewel surrounds in this neat tutorial by Barbieq25 http://forums.getpai...making-a-jewel/. Perfectly OK.

Not so Ok are these types of font: http://www.dafont.co...eme.php?cat=701 (they call them Dingbats)

EER, sorry I already fixed my image. New Rules? I thought you were stating old rules. :aagh:

I'm so confused. I'm going to wait for NN to speak her mind on the subject now.

I just assume that something like custom brushes that were downloaded for free useage and the Broadway Font that I used for the album title were payed for by me from larabie font a few years back would be ok. The brushes I used and the decorative font, that is not a dingbat are in my opinion used in a creative way. ;)

See? I knew this was going to be interesting!

IMHO:

Custom brushes that are patterns should be allowed. Brushes that are standalone images depicting a recognizable object I have a problem with, unless you created them yourself without use of any other image.

I feel the same with fonts. Stylistic text characters are fine, but fonts comprising images that are not recognizable as text characters I have an issue with. I'd be willing to concede the standard Webdings and Wingdings if the majority of users supported the use of these.

Remember; this is just for STOCKLESS competitions. Any competition that allows stocks just needs the correct attribution (e.g. ambulance image: Webdings font character h).

I am beginning to regret coming up with this theme taking into account the trouble people are having deciphering between what is and what is not 100%PDN. For what it's worth, I agree with Ego Eram Reputo's last comment.

And on that note, here is mine:

100% PDN & 100% weirdness!

Very interesting and a very grey area with what constitutes a created brush. Most custom brushes I have depict a recognizable object (apart from spray style brushes & the like)
I have amended my entry once again, removing the custom brushes "people" IMO it takes away a lot of impact from the previous version, but sadly I don't have any other form of custom brush to use that would fit with the image concept. I hope this time it is Ok :)

I really didn't want anyone to change their entry. I just wished to discuss the definition of "stock image".

Perhaps in some future competition it should be more clearly defined (after much discussion).

Throwing another thought in: what about when you use an image to create the basis of your work? For example: using a dingbat to create a larger, more clearer image of an element?

These areas are greyer. I can see you're thinking about this!

I'm of the opinion that if the dingbat was a part of your construction image then it counts. This means copying, enlarging, blurring or otherwise using the dingbat.

If you viewed it as a separate image and mentally (not physically) copied aspects of it then it becomes your own. E.g. inpired by is not the same as created using.

Open to conflicting opinions of course.

On the subject of competition rules maybe I should have heeded point 1 in the discussion part of the Competition Rules and had a discussion thread. I live and learn

Laziness on my part and I apologise.

Interesting reading.

Stock: When you take an image off t'internet and plonk it on a canvas. Not allowed

Dingbats: Allowed if you build on the original shape.

Vote for the 3 that catch your eye in the world of album cover art

Poll closes Wednesday August 1st (10pm GMT)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Totally off topic but where the hell has this year gone already ?)

Winner of this challenge chooses the next theme, with stiffer rules in #5 as to what counts as a stock image after much deliberation of the comments posted

I hadn't. But what a nice positive saying.

If I can gain about 40 years worth of days, I may hit the amount of friends my son has on his facelessbook account :evillaugh:
