Defining a transparent color?

Recommended Posts

Hi there.

I've looked all over, and can't find what I'm looking for. It might be a feature that doesn't exist. Is there any way to "define" a color as transparent? It would be easier on me than erasing the pieces that I don't need. Yup, I'm lazy!

Thanks much.

Hello 88keys,

If you just want to 'paint' with a transparent colour then there is a slider in the 'more' section of the color window.

If you want to replace an existing color with transparency, you could try my 'Recolour choice' plugin here...

http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/24584-recolour-choice-new/ or in my pack (link in sig).

Or you could use the magic wand to select, then fill selection (with the transparent color as described above).

- I'm sure there are many other ways too!

If you want to "draw with transparent" then you have to toggle the blending mode in the toolbar. Otherwise normal blending is enabled, and blending a transparent color into anything else results in whatever was already there -- it's a no-op. Overwrite blending will let you "draw with transparent."

Interesting, thank you both. I'll give the plugin (and pack) a try. Basically I just want to be able to do:

(color) = (color) --> PUNCH BUTTON --> (color) = (transparent).

I'll keep in mind the blending issue, too. Thanks much!

There are many color-to-alpha plugins available. Have a look through the Plugin Index
