Request - Ability to link layers

I know layer folders have already been suggested ( I had a look at the suggestions before posting ) but what does not seem to be have been requested is the ability to link layers without actually merging them. This would come in handy if , for example , you were creating a ringed planet and had the planet on one layer, the shadows on another and the rings on the the third layer but needed to move the whole planet, rings , shadow and all, to some other location in the image. At the moment you have to move them separately and fiddle around to line them up properly , or you could merge them but then if you need to make adjustments in the future it makes things tricky.

Plenty of other programs like Gimp and Photoshop have this ability already so it would be a welcome addition to PDN.

Yeah this is precisely what layer folders would let you do. Won't happen for 4.0 but stay tuned. Lots of new stuff is finally trickling into the code, e.g. http://blog.getpaint.net/2012/04/08/new-features-for-paint-net-4-0/

It won't be in 4.0 because 1) gotta draw a line somewhere so I can wrap things up and release it, and 2) maintaining .PDN file format backwards compatibility until there are enough new features to warrant it (and by that I mean features which require changes to the file format) (for instance, even adding a new layer blend mode would mean a PDN saved in 4.0 might not load at all in 3.5... not worth it by itself)
