edifantasy
Is there any plan to add a new feature that mimics the Save For Web feature from Photoshop / Web Image Guru? Actually, what I'm really interested in is color reduction when saving in PNG format (e.g. if the edited picture has only 24 colors and you save it in PNG-8 format, there's no need to save info for all 256 colors). I'm talking about optimizing the PNG file as more as possible (by keeping only needed chunks). That would be EXTREMELY useful
TinSoldier
I use command line tools to do that. http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/pngutils.htm Mostly I use pngquant to convert to 8-bit and pngcrush to sometimes recover about 20% or so space in a file. I know it isn't the solution you are looking for, but maybe it will help.
korteck
I'm just curious... how does optimizing a png file help you? Is a fully loaded png degraded in picture quality, or maybe you just want to save storage space on you computer?
TinSoldier
Avatars and such things usually have a size limit, so making the file as small as possible while retaining image quality is important. Many pictures don't require the full 24-bit color space. So for me, mainly, it is a bandwidth issue. I have broadband myself, but not everyone does. crosswalker
yeah, lots of full 24(32?) bit png avatars on a forum is really annoying on dialup. When I try to log on to a forum at a dialup comp it's like watching water boil.
Rick Brewster
Yeah but when water boils it's exciting and bubbly or something. We just haven't fleshed out the saving options for things like PNG file types, e.g. to support 24- and 8-bit saving. The big focus for this release (3.0) was MDI and gradients and some other usability things. This stuff is still on the giant feature backlog/todo list Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html

Actually I'm using PNG files on mobile phones and size does matter TinSoldier, I know those tools. I recommend pngout for optimizing. It has the best results. You can find it here: http://advsys.net/ken/utils.htm Rick, thank you for your answer. Maybe this will be part of the next major version's todo list
