What would be the best way to give myself some blank area to the side of an image?

I'm trying to use Paint.NET to caption an image. Generally, with MS Paint, I can just grab the side of the image and pull it further to the side, giving me some white area in which I can insert text. Is there a way that I can do something similar with Paint.NET?

Not by default. Paint.NET is a bitmap editor, not a word processor. That means that text is not stored as characters, rather as pixels like any other part of your image (therefore not re-editable). However, these plugins might help:

Well, thanks for the help, you two, but it's looking like I just chose the wrong program for what I'm trying to do. The canvas size does give me some white space to the side of the image, but it's a much clunkier way of doing that same thing than with MS Paint. And the editable text addon is nice, in that I could go back and change it, but otherwise, it doesn't really seem to do what I'm looking for. I'm always fighting with mismatches in the size of the text versus the white space. I would actually be perfectly happy with MS Paint, for what I'm doing, if only the zoom function worked properly. 25%, 50%, and 100% are simply not good enough for my purposes, hence my looking elsewhere.

It seem to be a simple thing. Pyrochild had the right suggestion. One thing in resizing the image is how you can tell PDN where to anchor the image. If you want to have the text on the right hand side, with white space, tell PDN to expand to the right while anchoring the image to the left. Make sense?

I would say MSPaint has everything he is looking for. You can resize the canvas (without stretching the image) quickly and easily using the nubs on the side and bottom giving extra white space to work on. Also if say you wanted to put text on a picture of a computer screen you can set the text box to the size of the screen and it will word wrap within the textbox. The zoom in MSPaint can go from 12.5% to 800%, and at 800% even I can see the pixels.
