Sounds like you're talking about Layer Transparency. However, I'm not entirely sure I'm understanding your problem. Could you perhaps post a screenshot of where your images are blocking your background when they shouldn't?

When a new layer is created, by default it is completely transparent. When you put another image in that layer, any place where that new image does not exist will still be transparent. So, if you want part of the background to show through, you should not place anything in front of it.

Now, if you want portions of that image to show and portions to be hidden, something like rounding the corners or removing white borders, then you merely need to delete the errant pizels.

I don't know. A screenshot would be most helpful. With something to look at, it's much easier to understand what's going on.
