Also, is there a plugin that enables you to directly select a layer when you click on it (as it does in PSD)? Are you talking about a Ctrl+click on a layer to select its contents like in Photoshop? If so, this isn't possible. What I do to get a similar selection in Paint.NET is set my tolerance to "0". Then I use the Magic Wand selection tool on the transparent area in my layer. Then I invert the selection Ctrl+I.
