Goonfella
This morning I had 14 updates from Microsoft, several of which were updates for Microsoft.Net Framework 4 ( KB2533523, KB2468871, KB2539636 ) and one for 3.5.1 ( KB2539635). I have noticed since then that Paint.Net seems much slower to load. Before when I clicked on the icon it appeared in a flash, now it seems to struggle to appear. I was just wondering if anyone else was having problems or if there was anything I could do to speed it up again? Rick Brewster
The updates probably invalidated the NGEN cache. I think it automatically recompiles everything once the system is idle for awhile, but you can just rerun the Paint.NET installer if you'd rather it happen now. It may take a few minutes at the end though, when it's "Optimizing performance for your system." Goonfella
Thanks Rick, I`ll wait and see what happens before re-installing. Hopefully I won`t need to. Rick Brewster
You can verify that the NGEN cache is being used if binaries with ".ni." are loaded. Using Process Explorer, enable View -> Show Lower Pane, and then select View -> Lower Pane View -> DLLs. You'll see something like this: You may or may not see the corresponding non-ni counterparts. "ni" stands for native image. Goonfella
When I search for Process Explorer nothing is found. Is this another name for Task Manager or something? - Never mind. Just realized it`s a downloadable program. Here is what I get. Can`t see the files you pointed out though. - Edited August 11, 2011 by Goonfella Quote Please feel free to visit my Gallery on PDNFans And my Alternatives to PDN
Rick Brewster
Oh, right, forgot to mention that. It's a Sysinternals/Microsoft utility. Goonfella
That`s OK Rick. As you can see I downloaded it and ran it. Is that OK? I wouldn`t know myself. Rick Brewster
Can`t see the files you pointed out though. - That's because you need to resize the Name column. Goonfella
Good news!! It seems to be back to normal again. I never did anything, just fired it up to do another check and to resize the name column as you suggested, and it loaded fine. I`ve closed it down and fired it up again a few times to make sure and it starts up OK again. The NGEN cache must have finally been recompiled . Thanks for the help Rick.
