A way to create some tubular net

For some drawing you need to create some net of tube or things like that (roads, railways, pipelines, etc).

This tutorial is a guideline to help you to do so.

Don't be afraid:

It seems a bit complicate because it first shows how to create the tool and then how to use it.

After that, you'll find a bonus tip...

My examples:

Needed plugins:

Align object

Gravity

Grid maker

Kaleidoscope

Lightrays

Panelling

Outline selection

My tutorial:

Follow the instructions on the images...

If you don't draw a too big circle (shouldn't be covered by the tubes) you will save some steps later...

To get ride of the tubes on the right, add a new layer and run a kaleidoscope with the box "colored helper only" checked. This will draw a new circle. Select outside and delete the selection on the layers with the tubes...

The tolerance to 69 is to avoid the orphan pixels when you fill the area...

BTW this method works better with larger images...

Also you could use other distortions effects like waves, polar, etc... But it is difficult to have the needed shape of the tube...

End of tutorial

Enjoy and let me see your creations...

Yes and this is confusing me... you're right its a linear reflected gradient.

To select the first 30 top lines, use the rectangle selection tool and watch the dimension information in the bottom status bar till you have 30 lines...

Sorry for the trouble, I'm updating the tut...

Thanks for the feedback.

This image uses this technic: (jake2k like...)

Apologies for the double post.

I've got it done! I made the tool & then created an image with it. Probably it is not what you had in mind but this is what I saw basically from the time I started to create the tool.

Madjik, thanks so much for a wonderful tute & a springboard for some fantastic ideas. I named this one for you because you deserve it for all your hard work.

  • 2 months later...

I think I understand the process pretty well, but can I select any section of tubing from any diameter circle? I was doing this and then rotating the copied tube section so it would fit into the tube section that came before it. I had a hard time controlling the shape of the tubing. This image was the result of my practicing the tut's method.

th_tubetangled.pngThanks for this tut. It gave my brain a good workout!;)
