32 bit BMP file support

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this has been requested before, but can you PLEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSEEE add support for 32 bit BMP files. Photoshop natively supports them and they have been used a lot by Microsoft's UI tools for a few years now - although a lot of them also allow PNG files, some (like the new Ribbon UI framework) only accepts images as BMP files and they must be 32 bit for the transparency information.

Someone has created a plugin for Paint.Net (http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/11201-alpha-32bits-bitmap-support-for-paintnet/) but it duplicates functionality and unfortunately does NOT work with the Ribbon UI markup file compiler, or the native Visual Studio resource viewer. I'm sure there are details else where about the proper 32 bit BMP file format. As an example, there is another tool (AlphaConv) that does convert PNG to BMP properly and is usable by the tools I mentioned. You could look at the BMP header of the output files as an example of a working 32 bit BMP file format?

I could fix up the plugin as the author released the source code for it, but its functionality would be better included in the core Paint.NET application as I have seen many other people posting in the forums here and elsewhere to do with this issue. I could even have a go changing the Paint.NET source code and send you a change list if need be. :-)

I have attached a 32 bit PNG and a 32 bit BMP created from it using AlphaConv.

Many thanks,
