"Error reading file from the media"

Recommended Posts

Hi...

I'm kind of brand new at this, and need help. I am running Paint.net version 3.5.6 on a Windows 7 netbook with 1 GB RAM. I was working with a PDN file with roughly 6 layers, 2316x1702, and went to save and it told me it encountered an error while saving. So I tried saving it various ways, including a PNG, but it couldn't save any of them. Stupidly, I closed the program, thinking that would fix the problem, but the next time I opened it I encountered this error message: "There was an error reading the file from the media." I rebooted and am still encountering this error message. I also recently downloaded several plugins but was using the basic gaussian blur tool at the time of the error. I really don't want to lose this particular image for obvious reasons and any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is the crash log:

Do you want the good news or the bad news first?

Bad news: Your file is irrecoverably gone.

Good news: This is fixed in v3.5.7, which I just released about an hour ago. You still won't be able to save a file if you run out of memory or disk space, but the original file on disk won't be stomped over.

Bad timing indeed.

Paint.NET 3.5.6 and older would overwrite your files as it saved them, and if any error was encountered in the process, it could effectively destroy the file.

Paint.NET 3.5.7, released today, implemented a new fault-tolerant mechanism, first saving a copy of the file, and then replacing the old one only after the save is confirmed to be successful.

Unfortunately, there is probably nothing that can be done to rescue your file unless you have a backup. (Lesson here: Keep backups of EVERYTHING)

If you attach the file here, we can take a look and see if it can be salvaged, but that's a pretty slim chance.

Had you been running 3.5.7 at the time of the failed save, you probably would have only lost the work since the last successful save. Like I said, bad timing :(

I am so pleased this has been fixed but bad timing indeed Elizabethashly.

1 GB of RAM is probably not enough if you are working on a large image with a few layers. At 2GB, I run out sometimes & I know by the way the program responds that it is about to happen - loads of experience there.

My workaround is to save the layers as a .PDN & name the file accordingly, then SAVE AS a .PNG. You end up with a few files but at least you can go back & edit any part that you need to.

I know how frustrating it is when you lose something on save.

OMG this just happened to me now! And just after reading this i am currently updating to 6.37!!!!

Is there a particluar pattern in how this happens? Because i have a big pic with many layers and its happened to that!

I am seriously gutted :(

Heres the file, please please please see if you can do anything for it. Even 1 layer would save me a lot of time. You see its for my new Manga me and a friend are making. (link in sig)

Just the thumbnail, but better than nothing, yes?

SAND33P, you can do the same thing if you're on Window 7 or Vista by putting the file on your desktop, then holding CTRL and scrolling the mousewheel up.

It IS better than nothing - at the very least, i can use it as a reference when i go to redo the picture. Thanks so much for all your help!

  • 1 year later...

Hello I have had a similar issue with .pdn files twice now. I work on an image, save it, open it again to check, and it works fine, then i close the program and shut down my pc for the night. Next morning I get up, turn on the Laptop wait for it to finish running in the background, then I tell it to open the same .pdn file I was working on the previous night. Bam I get the message: "There was an error reading the file from the media!" Again, this is the second time (not in a row) this has happened, both the same over night scenario, both on my brand new laptop (which has all the programs and files my old laptop did) on Windows 7, both using Paint.net v3.5.10 (no crash file is created, as the program does not close, only cant open the specific file).

Please help, I don't understand why it's behaving like this, and I would hate to lose some of my best work.

I think you have a hardware issue. Something is happening to the data - checked your HD?

Could be any part of the hardware. Doesn't sound like a Paint.NET issue even though it is the PDN files that are corrupted.

I realize it's likely no issue with Paint.net, but it still makes no sense that it works fine to open all that night and then can't open the very next day (like 12 hours later). Any suggestions you can give are appreciated (obviously this is not an uncommon issue, but that doesn't tell me anything about fixing it)

Edit: Frankly, I don't even know how to go about figuring out why it's doing/what is causing the issue, much less fix it

In all honesty I think it's your HD. Try saving to a USB stick and see if that is recoverable the next morning.

Until you fix this problem I'd get in the habit of making two or three copies of something you're working on. Save them in different locations and on different media (one removeable).

Virus scanned recently? I think it unlikely - but it pays to be sure.

Besides doing a chkdsk on it, try to determine the HDD brand (either by opening the unit or looking up the specs for your particular make and model laptop). Sometimes the Manufacturer of the laptop will list the HDD brand and model in their online specs (or some site that has done a review of the unit). Once you determine this, go to the site of the HDD Manufacturer (or see the link below) and download and run the applicable HDD Diagnostic software. I think these tests will be more in-depth than the chkdsk and may lead you to the issue if it is indeed the HDD.

The link below should help you locate the proper diagnostic software:

PLEASE HELP!!! This just happened to me in paint.net 4.1.5. I last saved the .pdn 2/19. Hadn't made any significant changes. Then today 2/21, I get the error with the following details:Ā

Ā

Application version: paint.net 4.1.5

System.IO.EndOfStreamException: Attempted to read past the end of the stream.
Ā  Ā at PaintDotNet.IO.StreamExtensions.ProperRead(Stream input, Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count) in D:\src\pdn\src\Base\IO\StreamExtensions.cs:line 131
Ā  Ā at PaintDotNet.Document.FromStream(Stream stream) in D:\src\pdn\src\Data\Document.cs:line 1393
Ā  Ā at PaintDotNet.FileType.Load(Stream input) in D:\src\pdn\src\Data\FileType.cs:line 496
Ā  Ā at PaintDotNet.Functional.Func.Eval[T1,TRet](Func`2 f, T1 arg1) in D:\src\pdn\src\Base\Functional\Func.cs:line 158

Ā

Does this mean anything to ya'll? I clearly don't want to lose this file! Days of work and at least 6 layers. 10 if you can't the ones I've merged down.Ā

NOTE: The file is now 4kb

Sounds like your file became corrupt. ā˜¹ļøĀ  Your best bet would be to restore it from a backup.
