elizabethashley42
Hi... I'm kind of brand new at this, and need help. I am running Paint.net version 3.5.6 on a Windows 7 netbook with 1 GB RAM. I was working with a PDN file with roughly 6 layers, 2316x1702, and went to save and it told me it encountered an error while saving. So I tried saving it various ways, including a PNG, but it couldn't save any of them. Stupidly, I closed the program, thinking that would fix the problem, but the next time I opened it I encountered this error message: "There was an error reading the file from the media." I rebooted and am still encountering this error message. I also recently downloaded several plugins but was using the basic gaussian blur tool at the time of the error. I really don't want to lose this particular image for obvious reasons and any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is the crash log: Application version: Paint.NET v3.5.6 (Final Release build 3.56.3972.42619) Time of crash: 2/20/2011 8:24:43 PM Application uptime: 05:56:31.7925405 Install directory: Rick Brewster
Do you want the good news or the bad news first? Bad news: Your file is irrecoverably gone. Good news: This is fixed in v3.5.7, which I just released about an hour ago. You still won't be able to save a file if you run out of memory or disk space, but the original file on disk won't be stomped over. pyrochild
Bad timing indeed. Paint.NET 3.5.6 and older would overwrite your files as it saved them, and if any error was encountered in the process, it could effectively destroy the file. Paint.NET 3.5.7, released today, implemented a new fault-tolerant mechanism, first saving a copy of the file, and then replacing the old one only after the save is confirmed to be successful. Unfortunately, there is probably nothing that can be done to rescue your file unless you have a backup. (Lesson here: Keep backups of EVERYTHING) If you attach the file here, we can take a look and see if it can be salvaged, but that's a pretty slim chance. Had you been running 3.5.7 at the time of the failed save, you probably would have only lost the work since the last successful save. Like I said, bad timing ambigram signature by Kemaru [i write plugins and stuff] If you like a post, upvote it!
barbieq25
I am so pleased this has been fixed but bad timing indeed Elizabethashly. 1 GB of RAM is probably not enough if you are working on a large image with a few layers. At 2GB, I run out sometimes & I know by the way the program responds that it is about to happen - loads of experience there. My workaround is to save the layers as a .PDN & name the file accordingly, then SAVE AS a .PNG. You end up with a few files but at least you can go back & edit any part that you need to. I know how frustrating it is when you lose something on save. Knowledge is no burden to carry. Ā April Jones, 2012 Ā Gallery My DA Gallery
elizabethashley42
Oh no. That's a major bummer. I would have attached the file like pyrochild suggested but it's telling me that "You aren't permitted to upload this kind of file". Sadness! I don't suppose i could email it? At any rate, I'm glad the problem is now fixed and thanks everyone for responding. Blah!

NinjaManDan21
Hello I have had a similar issue with .pdn files twice now. I work on an image, save it, open it again to check, and it works fine, then i close the program and shut down my pc for the night. Next morning I get up, turn on the Laptop wait for it to finish running in the background, then I tell it to open the same .pdn file I was working on the previous night. Bam I get the message: "There was an error reading the file from the media!" Again, this is the second time (not in a row) this has happened, both the same over night scenario, both on my brand new laptop (which has all the programs and files my old laptop did) on Windows 7, both using Paint.net v3.5.10 (no crash file is created, as the program does not close, only cant open the specific file). Please help, I don't understand why it's behaving like this, and I would hate to lose some of my best work. Sig Battle Wins: 5My Gallery | Smoke>Flames Tutorial~96% of teens won't stand up for God. Ego Eram Reputo
Could be any part of the hardware. NinjaManDan21
I realize it's likely no issue with Paint.net, but it still makes no sense that it works fine to open all that night and then can't open the very next day (like 12 hours later). Any suggestions you can give are appreciated (obviously this is not an uncommon issue, but that doesn't tell me anything about fixing it) Edit: Frankly, I don't even know how to go about figuring out why it's doing/what is causing the issue, much less fix it Edited October 25, 2012 by NinjaManDan21 Sig Battle Wins: 5My Gallery | Smoke>Flames Tutorial~96% of teens won't stand up for God. Ego Eram Reputo
In all honesty I think it's your HD. Try saving to a USB stick and see if that is recoverable the next morning. Until you fix this problem I'd get in the habit of making two or three copies of something you're working on. Save them in different locations and on different media (one removeable). Virus scanned recently? I think it unlikely - but it pays to be sure. ebook: Mastering Paint.NET | resources: Plugin Index | Stereogram Tut | proud supporter of Codelab plugins: EER's Plugin Pack | Planetoid | StickMan | WhichSymbol+ | Dr Scott's Markup Renderer | CSV Filetype | dwarf horde plugins: Plugin Browser | ShapeMaker
jim100361
Besides doing a chkdsk on it, try to determine the HDD brand (either by opening the unit or looking up the specs for your particular make and model laptop). Sometimes the Manufacturer of the laptop will list the HDD brand and model in their online specs (or some site that has done a review of the unit). Once you determine this, go to the site of the HDD Manufacturer (or see the link below) and download and run the applicable HDD Diagnostic software. I think these tests will be more in-depth than the chkdsk and may lead you to the issue if it is indeed the HDD. The link below should help you locate the proper diagnostic software: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/tophddiag.htm
