Well, I wrote him too, maybe I was less polite because I told him that "his" software was a Rip-Off of Paint.NET and he should at least give some credit.

I got this back :

"i do give creddit to the original authors read the documentations you f*cker"

Well Rick, you seem to be the next target of this scam artist. You're not the first one as we can see!

This guy is a total joke:

Heh... That's some good reading there! And I see Rick got to the end before I did.

This guy kinda reminds me of AA Fussy, just with more gore.

Also, feel free to click "Report Abuse" at the top of the website. He's using some free/cheap website hosting, and you can report the page as a copyright infringement.

If you've installed his program, I highly suggest you scan your system for spyware.

Trouble with viruses?

Download AVG Anti-virus program

Housecall Online Anti-virus Scanner

Trouble with spyware? (Run both multiple times until they come up clean)

Download Ad-Aware

Download Spybot

Toeing the party line of my employer, I must also suggest Windows Live OneCare : http://onecare.live.com -- It has a 90-day free trial.

If you have a plugin that was included in this bundling. Just look at the screenshot on the webpage, no need to d/l and install, I recommend that you also e-mail him about this. Please be polite and intelligent.

Oh, darn! I guess my stuff wasn't good enough for him. :D

Probably because you and Illnab1024 put your name on the effect config dialog, and that's "too hard" to remove ;)

is there any way of incorporating into version 3, something that will check the about message and if YOU are not listed then the program will show an error that will credit you, and shut the program down with a link to your version.

Well, I finally got two replies back from him.

#1:

i will remove that simple site but you will not stop me from distribution as your license says

Then immediately after, #2:

Ok I have removed the website and all accompaning files...

Please give me in deph instructions on what your license means i don't know if you know this but i sent off for a lagitimate EULA Copyright Patent for Visual Paint today I have enclosed all source code in envalopes and sent off for copyright patents 491787085678216-elgh

which will mean that if you donot already have the legal copyright to paint.net then paint.net will become mine...

also open source is open source anybody can do what they wish it is free as in freeware not shareware or commercial

send me your requirments also the only way to stop distribution is through civil lawsuite not criminal come on really do you want to spend all of that money taking me to court? and hoping i show up

After reading this I saw the website had transformed in to one full of pornography links. Now it appears to be a generic Web1000 page.

do you own the copyright, if not print the source code and seal it in an envelope send it to your self, do your postmarks have the date on them, this way you'll be able to prove that you own the source

I wrote 95% of the source code myself. I could have 20 people vouch for it in person who've seen me slave away at it. If it came down to it I could explain the design and purpose of any source code file in the project, and its relationship to other source files. There's no reason to print out source code when you have a CVS server that has recorded every single modification to the source code over the last 2 years. There's also the entire Internet full of blog entries, news articles, and forum posts related to the project. I think that's a little stronger evidence than 1500 pages of printed out source code where he did search-and-replace on my name for his.

Rick, is Paint.NET properly licensed to you and the devs?

Let's think about that statement for a moment :) Who would have licensed it to us? We wrote it!

Thanks for your concerns everyone. Trust me though, I'm not concerned about this.

Allright here's the last e-mail I just sent. Hopefully this ends this little saga.

Hello,

Thank you for removing the website contents and ceasing the distribution of the "Visual Paint" software which was infringing on my copyright and the copyrights of others. You did the right thing, and we all appreciate it.

I encourage you to pursue other ventures which do not involve Paint.NET. And yes, I do have the legal copyright to Paint.NET, along with the other contributors that are credited. That's why it says "Copyright © Rick Brewster..." all over the source code and the downloads.

If you need in-depth details as to what the license permits, and also what it does not permit, then I recommend that you consult with a lawyer. Trust me, the license isn't as simple as it sounds -- I've spoken with lawyers about it in the past. Sometimes it seems like they have their own language, and things don't always mean what you or I would think they're supposed to mean.

Anyway, best of luck to you,

-Rick Brewster

It always pisses them off when you send a very formal looking, very calm, message. I hope this was indeed resolved...
