Popular Science Magazine Recently ran an article on their website about open source alternatives to Photoshop CS2 and Paint Shop Pro X. Although Gimp and Gimpshop kinda stole the spotlight in the article, a link was provided for Open Source Alternative ("A quick online guide to the best open source software.") where Paint.NET is duly listed as a viable alternative to the afore mentioned heavy hitters.

Yeah. I guess I was trying to illustrate how I came to find Paint.NET on the OSALT website.

The Inquirer included an ad hoc Paint.NET benchmark in a motherboard review, http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36501 . (just search for "paint.net" and you'll find it)

Yeah, it's funny how they can spike ate any time:

One.

Two.

Three.

Funny, isn't it?

EDIT:

Even older than the PCWorld article, but still good to see.

ANOTHER EDIT:

For other less experienced users there is Paint.net, an amazingly sophisticated piece of work from computer science students at Washington State University. It's not quite as powerful as The Gimp but a lot easier to use and install. It's also getting better; the new V3 beta continues this product's impressive development record. However V2.x is only for Windows 2000 while V3 requires XP SP2.

YET ANOTHER EDIT:

Digipen (video game colage) uses paint.net on all their computers in replace of the gimp.

Isn't that right down the street from Microsoft?

Adjacent from Nintendo Product Development and across the street from Nintendo and infront of the MS building and behind the 7-11
