On a new image (with a white background); ctrl+a, del.

save as png or gif (they support transparency).

I might add that if you have it as a jpg and then save it as a png the white background will probably still be there. So you will need to use the Grim Color Reaper to get rid of the white or you can use the magic wand and then use the feather or AA's Assistant to clean up the excess.
