why can I not add text?

Hi pretty new to this.

I have used paint for years and know my way around quite well. I have now installed Paint.net.

I have been trying to use the type tool but no text is appearing when I type, and yes I have made sure the colour selected for the type is different from the background.

Any ideas?????

The most likely cause is either you were trying to put text outside of a current selection or you were trying to put text on a layer that was covered by something on a higher layer.

In the former case, be sure to press Esc before using the text tool.
