Layers not doing what I "think" is supposed to happen

Hi, been using Paint for a year plus, and diligently look at [Help] and search the board for answers before I ask. I have four layers, one is selected (meaning it is in the blue row) and checked with the check mark. When I crop the selected and single checked layer, all four layers are cropped. I know I must be missing something, but can't figure it out.

If you want to make the rest of the layer transparent, invert the layer's contents and press delete. If you want to crop the layer to a specific size, then unfortunately Paint.NET doesn't support layers of different sizes.

, won't do what I thought it would do. I will revert to resizing the image in PowerPoint (familiarity plus can save the image in multiple formats including png) and then opening it or pasting it into a layer.

You can just select the whole layer and then crop it, I think this will just affect the layer you're working with,as far as I know.

To clarify what I said, it doesn't support layers of different sizes, but you can make only part of the layer opaque.

Hello.

I do not know where to ask this but I read about layers and so I am asking. I am new for the Paint.NET. May I know that what the layers mean in the picture. Is different pictures have different no of layers or same. Can I remove ballpen marking from photo ? Or tell me about the exact forum where i can ask this question ?
