Transparency Topic

And the white and grey checkerboard pattern is Paint.NET's way of displaying transparency, just so you know.

If I use the magic wand to highlight the background of an image and delete this area I get the checkered pattern, however when I save the image the background is still the original colour, not transparent! Why is that?
